Thank You for an Adventurous Summer! Our Summer Reading program, Adventure Begins at Your Library, is wrapping up for the season. We thank you for joining us as we dove into the pages of thrilling tales, explored far-off lands, and met fascinating characters along the way! Participants who have read and logged five books and completed one activity are welcome to pick up their completion prizes at their home library starting August 1. Prizes are available while supplies last. Saratoga Library: July 31 at 11 a.m. and 12 p.m. Los Altos Library: August 10 at 10:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Hula Show: Cupertino Library, July 31 at 3 p.m.

Concert Ticket Giveaway Thanks to a Summer Reading partnership with LiveNation, we have TWO Family 4-Packs of tickets to give away to see Kidz Bop perform live at Shoreline Amphitheatre on September 22. Kidz Bop is a children's music group that makes family-friendly covers of current popular songs, sung by kids. Drawing Entry Rules: One entry per family. Multiple entries will be disqualified. Winners must be able to attend the concert on September 22. Please note: parking fees and other costs not included. Only 500 entries will be accepted. The winners will be notified by September 6.

Celebrate StoryWalks! SCCLD continues to add more Storywalks® in our partner cities. To celebrate our Storywalks®, we are hosting several free community programs. Sean’s Music Factory will be visiting Morgan Hill Library on August 10 at 10:30 a.m. to perform a special family concert with songs all about cats and colors. Sean's Music Factory will later visit Jack Fischer Park in Campbell on Wednesday, September 11. Join us at the park for storytime at 10:30 a.m. followed by a concert at 11:15 a.m.

Final Days of Teen Contests There are a few days left to enter into one or both of our two teen contests. Photographers ages 12 – 18 are invited to enter our Teen Photo Contest. Show off your skills and capture your adventures! All original photography is welcome. Winners will be displayed on SCCLD’s website and in our libraries, and may be reproduced for public distribution. The contest runs through July 31. Submit an entry here: https://sccld.org/photo-contest/ We are also offering our Teen Bookmark Art Contest, where artists ages 12 to 18 are invited to submit original bookmark designs centered on the theme, "Adventure Begins at Your Library." Gold Medal Reads Over the next few weeks, some 10,500 athletes are competing in 45 different sports. One new sport is making its way into the games – Breakdancing! -The mascot is a Phryge, a soft red hat worn during the French Revolution -The games are taking place in Paris exactly 100 years since Paris hosted the Olympics in 1924 -Paris is joining London as the only cities to host the Olympics three times. The Paris games were in 1900, 1924, and now in 2024. Find some Gold Medal reads in this blog.

Programs to Help Students with College Applications We have two upcoming programs for teens interested in higher education and their families. Teens are invited to a Flex Prep Seminar on Wednesday, August 7 at 6 p.m. at Cupertino Library. A Flex Certified Counselor will talk about what works in college admissions, and the growing importance of a great college essay. Online registration is required.

Gardening Programs Calling all gardeners! We have some interesting programs coming up in the next few weeks. Learn the science of seed saving and how to successfully save seeds for the future. Learn the types of blueberries that flourish in our region and explore essential topics. Learn about citrus varieties for our climate, planting tips, soil preparation, nutrient requirements and more. Kids who stop by the Lunch at the Library program at Morgan Hill Library on July 31 at 12 p.m. can pick up a Gardening Kit. Valley Verde will share the importance of gardening while inspiring a new generation to get connected to our food system and the world.

Early Bird Hours at Gilroy Library SCCLD is offering a new service at the Gilroy Library. Open Access allows patrons to enjoy exclusive, self-service access to browse books, check out library materials, relax and read, or use the free WiFi in the Gilroy Library lobby, before the library fully opens to the public. It's easy to get started! 1. Visit the Gilroy Library during regular open hours to fill out a form to register for self-service hours. 2. Once you have completed the form, take it to the accounts desk. 3. Staff will walk you through a short demonstration of how to scan your card to access self-service hours. 4. Once the demonstration is completed, staff will update your library card to allow access to self-service hours. Open Access is available Sunday-Wednesday, from 10 a.m.-- 1 p.m. (excluding holidays). Please note: no staff assistance will be provided, so if you need help, please visit during regular library hours for full service. This service is also available at Woodland Library (Open Access hours are 8 a.m. -- 11 a.m. Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday, excluding holidays). Please visit the Accounts Desk to sign up. Jacobs The League of Women Voters of San Jose/Santa Clara in partnership with SCCLD invites you to a special Lunch with League program on Thursday, August 15 at 12 p.m. You’ll hear from New York Times bestselling author A.J. Jacobs about his new book, The Year of Living Constitutionally. In this book, Jacobs sets out to find what it means to live by the Constitution, and he does so, living as closely as possible to the original meaning of the Constitution.
