No Tricks, All Treats This Halloween! Halloween is three weeks away. The library can help you get into the spirit! Visit our free eResource, CreativeBug, to find videos on creating Halloween costumes, party décor, crafts, and more. While you’re crafting, enjoy some mischievous music using our free streaming/downloading music service, Freegal. Scare yourself with these Fright Fest films on our free video streaming service, Kanopy. Treat yourself to Overdrive eBooks – Spooktacular Lists for Adults, Spooky Season Reads for teens, and Scary Stories for kids. Halloween is the most popular holiday among many of our library staff, so patrons can expect and enjoy free, fun programs planned throughout the month. Student eResource: National Geographic Kids The universe is filled with amazing wonders! This is a great resource for both fun and school, and includes the National Geographic Kids magazine, books, images, and more. Adults can use OverDrive to access current issues of National Geographic, or search the archives to find issues dating back to 1888!

Día de Los Muertos Programs Coming Up Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a holiday honoring loved ones who have passed. It is celebrated in Mexico, other areas of Latin America and the United States. Our libraries are hosting programs to mark the occasion. Stop by Gilroy Library anytime between October 16-November 4 to view an altar (ofrenda). Drop-in crafts for children will be available while supplies last. Teens (ages 12-18) are invited to a Día de los Muertos Crafternoon on Friday, October 27 at 4 p.m. at Gilroy Library. Make nichos (shadow boxes), máscaras de Calaveras (skull masks) and coronas de flores (flower crowns). Please register. Campbell Express Library is hosting an adult craft on Wednesday, October 25 at 6:30 p.m. Participants will create nichos (shadow boxes) to hold family photos and mementos. Registration is required.

Celebrating Our Friends of the Library Groups We want to take a moment and say THANK YOU to our library support groups including the Friends of the Library, Library Endowments, Library Foundations, North County Library Authority, Library Commissions, and our Joint Powers Authority Board. We recognize their hard work, dedication and time spent supporting our libraries. Each of our libraries’ Friends group is independently operated to help support the local library through fundraising, volunteering, and awareness. Friends of the Library groups also host used book sales, with proceeds supporting library services.

Fire Prevention Week is October 8-14 According to the National Fire Protection Association, cooking fires are the leading cause of home fire and home fire injuries with unattended cooking as the leading cause. Find cooking safety tips here. The Santa Clara County Fire Department is hosting in-person and online programs about being prepared for disasters and fire safety for children. See the schedule.

Horror Writing Panel Authors Francesca Maria and Sumiko Saulson will be reading from their published works, discuss the importance of the horror genre, and engage in a Q&A with the audience. There will be an opportunity to meet the authors, have them sign books, and even obtain their new releases. This discussion is for teens ages 16+ and adults. Protecting Your MoneyWe are adding additional personal finance workshops as we mark Financial Planning Month this October. These workshops cover important topics such as online security, tax practices and investor education. Stop by the Saratoga Library on Monday, October 16 at 10:30 a.m. to hear from a representative from the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Consumer Protection Unit. They will discuss scams that target older adults, including the grandparents scam, prize and lottery scams, and more. On Friday, October 20 at 4 p.m. at Morgan Hill Library, Mark Nagel from the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office for a presentation on common scams and general cybersecurity concerns. Upcoming Author EventsWe want to let you know about two upcoming author events. Join the Morgan Hill Library on Thursday, October 19 at 4 p.m. for a virtual author visit with distinguished Oakland librarian and public historian Dorothy Lazard. Her new memoir, What You Don’t Know will Make a Whole New World, shares how the library helped her dream during the late 1960s and 1970s. This event will be held over Zoom. You can join from home or watch the event live from the Morgan Hill Library. Please register. Los Altos Library is hosting a special author event on Thursday, October 26 at 7 p.m. Local author Andy Dolich will discuss his recent book, which was co-authored with sportswriter Dave Newhouse, Goodbye, Oakland (2023). The book is a tour of Oakland sports history and a look toward the future of professional sports in the East Bay. No registration necessary.

New County Website The County of Santa Clara has launched a new website that allows users to better connect with services and resources. SantaClaraCounty.gov makes it easier to navigate, search and find services and information online, whether accessing the portal on a computer or mobile device. There is increased accessibility for people who are differently abled and future plans include language accessibility features. The full migration of county webpages will be completed by December 31, 2024.

Special Service: Open Access at Woodland Library The Woodland Library is offering a special service to patrons. Open Access allows patrons to enjoy exclusive, self-service access to pick up holds, browse the collection, borrow library materials, relax and read, or use the WiFi, computers, printers and copy machines. Open Access privileges provides an additional 3 hours of self-service access on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday from 8 to 11 a.m. (excluding holidays). Please note: no staff assistance will be provided, so if you need help, please visit during library hours for full service. Interested patrons please to visit the Woodland Library accounts desk during regular open hours and fill out a registration form. After approval, staff will provide a short demonstration on how to use the service. You can also view a video tutorial here.

Box not accepted). You can also visit any of our libraries during open hours to convert your eCard, or apply for a full use card to check out any of our physical and digital materials and resources.
