Thanksgiving Planning Help Thanksgiving is on Thursday, November 23. The library can help you create a wonderful and memorable feast. Browse through our Thanksgiving cookbooks to help prepare an unforgettable meal of main courses, side dishes, and desserts. Patrons can also try out our new online resource, New York Times Cooking, to explore some of the world’s best recipes. Visit OverDrive to check out holiday editions of popular magazines such as Eat Well, Food Network Magazine, and Cook's Illustrated. If you are interested in arts and crafts, look no further than CreativeBug, our free resource that provides unlimited access to over 1,000 art & craft classes. Find DIY activities like fall leaf wreaths and garlands, distressed wooden chalkboards, and holiday Cricut crafts. Please note SCCLD libraries will be closed and services unavailable on Thursday & Friday, November 23-24 for the Thanksgiving holiday but our online library is available 24/7. Native American Heritage Month We invite patrons to visit the online exhibition, Feathered Relations: Works by Marwin Begaye (Diné [Navajo]). Begaye’s exhibition creates a conceptual homage to birds through stunning prints, intricately carved wood blocks, and colorful multimedia works. Feathered Relations: Works by Marwin Begaye originated at the C.N. Gorman Museum at University of California, Davis. The online exhibition is brought to you in partnership with Exhibit Envoy. There is also our Native American Heritage Month Reading Challenge on Beanstack. Celebrate rich cultural traditions, histories, and contributions of Indigenous peoples in North America. Find books for children, teens and adults in this blog. Once you complete the challenge, you are eligible to receive a pin designed by local Native American artist Mariza Ryce Aparicio-Tovar. Channel Your Inner Novelist November is National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo). The annual program started as a challenge – to write 50,000 words of a novel in 30 days. According to the NaNoWriMo website, the challenge now draws thousands of people from around the world. From encyclopedias and directories for research, to dictionaries and thesauruses for definitions and synonyms, our Online Library can help you with writing. Veterans Day is November 11 Veterans Day was originally recognized as Armistice Day, to mark the end of fighting during World War I. Every November 11, we recognize and thank service members who have served in the United States Armed Forces. We have a webpage dedicated to veterans and their families. Here you can find local and state resources, as well as resources to help transition from military to civilian life. All SCCLD libraries will be closed on Friday and Saturday, November 10 & 11 in observance of Veterans Day. Veterans and active military service members, we thank you for your service!

The Distinguished Author Series Featuring Mitch Albom Be one of the first to hear directly from Albom about his new book, The Little Liar which is set to be released on November 14. The novel explores honesty, survival, revenge and devotion in a story set during the Holocaust. The talk will be followed by Q&A and a book signing. The Little Liar will be available for purchase from Books, Inc. at the event. The Distinguished Author Series is free and open to the public. Upcoming College Programs Registration is now open for upcoming programs aimed at teens who want to go to college. Click on each program link below to register. Flex Prep’s “The New Perfect Profile” for Getting into the UCs will share what University of California schools are looking for in their applicants, what types of student profiles have the most success in getting acceptances and how ACE can level up a student’s profile. This program will be on Wednesday, November 15 at 7 p.m. at Cupertino Library. Choosing a College Major/AI in Admissions will provide an overview on college majors, including which ones are popular today and how artificial intelligence may change things. This program is on Thursday, November 16 at 7 p.m. at Los Altos Library. No registration necessary.

t  Upcoming Changes to Online Services We want to let patrons know about changes coming to the Kanopy and SimplyE resources. Kanopy, our free video streaming service, is switching from play credits to tickets. With this update, you can easily see the number of tickets required and viewing period for each film (next to the play button). This change will not effect Kanopy Kids which will continue to have unlimited streaming access to children friendly content. Learn more in this blog, including how to use Kanopy. The New York Public Library, the developers behind the SimplyE service, will be ending support for SimplyE in 2024. It will also be removed from the SCCLD website. Due to this, SCCLD encourages users of SimplyE to begin to transition their eBook and Audiobook usage to another one of our many providers of Audiobooks, eBooks and other digital media. Users can find a variety of eMaterials using OverDrive/Libby, The Palace Project and/or CloudLibrary. Read this blog for more information.

Only need to use something once, or want to try something out before you buy? Our Things can save you money and space! -Discover new culinary techniques using a hot pot with grill or sous vide -Film your adventures and make a movie with a Go Pro 11 -Connect with other hobby enthusiasts with kits for bird watching, sewing or making music Things are available to check out for up to three weeks from the Milpitas Library *only* and cannot be put on hold or renewed. Things can be checked out and must be returned to the Milpitas Library Accounts Desk. Patrons must be 18+ and have a full use library card. Check out our Things online or in person at the Milpitas Library.
