April is Financial Literacy Month Financial Literacy Month was created to raise awareness to the importance of financial literacy and the need for effective financial education. Financial literacy is having the knowledge to manage your money and reach meaningful goals. The Smart Investing Guide on our website was developed for all ages and incomes, and for various financial goals, whether learning about basic banking, buying a car, or protecting against identity theft. We are also hosting two webinars for adults. Join us on Tuesday, April 18 at 7 p.m. to learn the nuances of Social Security benefits and how they might impact your personal finances. Then on Saturday, April 22 at 3 p.m., families can learn about Intergenerational Wealth Transfer. Please register for these events. Online and telephone scams are increasing, and scammers keep finding new ways to take advantage of innocent people. SCCLD will be hosting a special series about how you can protect yourself and loved ones featuring Deputy District Attorney Erin West and Stanford Internet Observatory Researcher, Riana Pfefferkorn. Mark your calendars for Wednesday, April 19 at 11 a.m. at the Saratoga Library and Saturday, April 29 at 3 p.m. at the Cupertino Library. Financial literacy is also very important for teens. That is why we are teaming up with KeyPoint Credit Union to offer a three-part series on financial literacy in April. Topics include basic money management, understanding credit and making good money decisions. Learn more and register here.

Understanding the MEHKO Ordinance A recently approved County ordinance will allow food entrepreneurs to legally prepare, cook, and sell food out of a private home kitchen. The Microenterprise Home Kitchen Operations (MEHKO) makes it easier for people to get into the food industry, as starting a brick-and-mortar restaurant or food truck can be expensive. Interested vendors need to apply for a permit on the Department of Environmental Health’s website. If you’d like to know more about the MEHKO Ordinance, several of our libraries are hosting a program about it. Visit Gilroy Library on Wednesday, April 12 at 7 p.m. or Morgan Hill Library on Wednesday, April 26 at 6:30 p.m. to hear from a local sustainable food advocate who will explain the ordinance. There will be time for Q&A. Save your seat and register. Walk-ins welcome as space allows.
