“Connecting” is the Silicon Valley Reads 2021 Theme The annual community reading program, Silicon Valley Reads, has always focused on connecting people from different backgrounds, connecting with powerful and thoughtful books, connecting through ideas. This year, staying connected has been difficult for many of us because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The usual ways in which people would be engaged have been disrupted, but thanks to human resiliency, they are finding other kinds of connections. This year’s book selections highlight different ways people can stay connected during times of uncertainty. There are six featured titles for adults, and a number of companion books for children and teens. Visit our website to see the titles and learn more about the program.

Annual Earthquake Drill This week marks 31 years since the Loma Prieta earthquake. In its aftermath, there was a push to retrofit buildings and prepare for the next “Big One.” The ShakeOut began in 2008 as a drill “designed to educate the public about how to protect themselves during an earthquake and how to get prepared.” This year's ShakeOut is scheduled for Thursday, October 15. The County of Santa Clara’s Office of Emergency Management is a great resource for earthquake preparedness. There is also the ReadySCC app to help people create a family disaster preparedness plan, including ways to build up emergency supplies and store vital emergency contacts.
