San Jose Sharks x SCCLD Library Cards
Now Available!
Our limited-edition San Jose Sharks x SCCLD library cards are NOW AVAILABLE at our libraries and the Bookmobile. The cards feature the Sharks new look – Turn it All Teal.

What better way to celebrate National Library Card Sign Up Month and the Sharks than with a free library card! We want to make sure every child, teen and adult has their very own library card. A library account is a free but at the same time, priceless tool that can help people belong, connect and discover.

New patrons can come in and get a card. Existing patrons can update their account with these limited-edition designs. Stop by any of our libraries or Bookmobile stop. Learn more about getting a library card at sccld.org/card.

We are celebrating this partnership Tuesday, September 8 at Cupertino Library. Children of all ages and their families are invited to a special San Jose Sharks Storytime at 4 p.m. Listen to fun stories featuring some very special guests and giveaways. Space is limited and doors will close when capacity is reached.

If you are an adult without kids, or you can’t make it on Sep 8, don’t worry you have other opportunities to see the San Jose Sharks – there are other Sharks Around the Bay tours happening over the next few days.

KIDS AND FAMILIES

A Lasting Legacy
So many were saddened to hear about the passing of the iconic Dolly Parton. Aside from her work in entertainment, one of her greatest contributions was Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. This program gifts books to children aged 0-5 all over the world. Since 1995, more than 322,411,000 books have been provided to children.

We are coming up on the one-year mark since the Imagination Library was introduced to Santa Clara County. In that one year, almost 23,000 children have signed up and more than 172,000 books have been gifted to them.

We encourage all families with young children to sign up for the free program. Age appropriate books are mailed to you once a month, and are available in English or bilingual English/Spanish.

Thank you, Dolly, for being a champion for literacy and bringing light to so many lives. Your legacy lives on through the Imagination Library.
Volunteer Reading Tutors Needed in South County
A little more than 50% of 3rd graders in Santa Clara County meet the state target for reading at grade level by the end of 3rd grade. That means nearly half of 3rd graders need reading support.

Gilroy and Morgan Hill Libraries are piloting a new program called Read to Lead. It is aimed at helping 2nd and 3rd grade students who need help reading at grade level. We are looking for volunteers ages 14+ who are able to devote 90 minutes two afternoons a week to help kids with reading.

Training starts in September, with the program starting in October. Learn more about Read to Lead and the application process on our website.
Make Reading an Adventure!
We are hosting Family Literacy Workshops, in partnership with the Santa Clara County Office of Education, at many of our libraries this fall.
Join us for these special workshops at the SCCLD library closest to you. Discover simple, interactive ways to help children understand what they read and help them grow their vocabulary through questions and conversations.

Rise Up and Run 5K
The County of Santa Clara Reentry Resource Center and its partners are hosting a 5K run/walk to raise money to support the immediate needs of justice-involved people.

The County of Santa Clara Reentry Resource Center sees clients ready to make dramatic changes in their lives, but having a felony record can be restrictive. Access to jobs, housing, and other opportunities becomes limited due to employment, housing restrictions and social stigma.

Yet despite these challenges, clients are determined to clear those hurdles.

Please support these individuals through the 5K Rise Up and Run. The in-person 5K is on Saturday, October 17 at 9 a.m. at Hellyer County Park. Participants can also choose a virtual open and can run or walk anytime between October 17 – 31.
