Gearing up for Silicon Valley Reads This year the community engagement program, Silicon Valley Reads is offering a variety of recommended books and virtual programs centered on the theme, Connecting – the universal human ability to build resilience by looking for people, places and things that provide comfort and joy during tough times. The recommended books are a medley of titles, including memoirs, novels and nonfiction books that approach the concept of connecting from different vantage points, such as nature, music, food, animals, books and human contact for mental and physical health. Join us on Thursday, January 28, at 6:30pm for our kickoff event, Together: Connection and Finding Comfort. This virtual event features Santa Clara County Public Health Officer Dr. Sara Cody, neurosurgeon Dr. James Doty who is also the founder of the Stanford Center for Compassion and Altruism, Usha Srinivasan, founder of Mosaic Silicon Valley and a special appearance by featured author of Together: The Healing Power of Connection in a Sometimes Lonely World and U.S. Surgeon General Nominee, Dr. Vivek Murthy. In February and March, there will be more than 100 online public programs for all ages including author talks, discussion panels, educational events, demonstrations, performances, activities for students, storytimes and a virtual art exhibit. The calendar will be published on the Silicon Valley Reads website later this week.

Getting the COVID-19 Vaccine The County of Santa Clara received nearly 100,000 COVID-19 vaccine doses and thousands of healthcare workers and medical first responders have been vaccinated. Many in the public are wondering when it will be their turn to get the vaccine. Santa Clara County is in Phase 1a of the state’s prioritization tiers, found here. According to the County’s website, it could take some time before everyone in the Bay Area who wants a vaccine has gotten one. This means until then, everyone needs to work together to keep the risk of COVID-19 low by wearing face masks, keeping distance and not gathering in groups.
