Could You Be the Next County Poet Laureate? The Santa Clara County Library District, the County of Santa Clara and SVCREATES is opening the application process for the position of 2022-2023 Santa Clara County Poet Laureate. Applications will be accepted through September 24, 2021. It is an honorary post whose responsibilities are to elevate the awareness of Santa Clara County residents around poetry and help celebrate the literary arts. Eligibility Criteria for the Santa Clara County Poet Laureate: - Must be available to serve a two-year term from January 2022 through December 2023
- The individual will be a current Santa Clara County resident who has resided in the County for the past three years and has been published or recognized for poetry and literary contributions
- The individual’s poetic interests respond to, or represent, the diversity of arts and cultures in Santa Clara County
- The individual has demonstrated a commitment to and passion for poetry and embraces the opportunity to engage in civic discourse

Revolutionizing Food Endorsed by the United Nations in 1999, IYD celebrates young peoples’ voices, actions and initiatives. This year’s theme is Transforming Food Systems: Youth Innovation for Human and Planetary Health. Fire Safety and Awareness for Children Fire season is here. Get kids prepared by reading books about fire and fire safety, including preventative measures, fire drills, how to get help, and more. Our librarians have created a booklist of picture books and short non-fiction for preschool and early elementary school students. Free Comic Book Day is Saturday The 20th anniversary of Free Comic Book Day is this Saturday, August 14. Find a participating store near you and take a look at the full lineup of free comics here. Visit the Gilroy Library on Aug 14 between 10 a.m.-2 p.m. to pick up a free comic book while supplies last! You can enjoy thousands of digital comics and graphic novels anytime using our free online resource, ComicsPlus by LibraryPass. Here you will find indie comics, Sunday funnies and manga.

Special Teen Event: Hack Your Planner We invite teens to a special event on Saturday, August 28 at 1 p.m. Wellness expert and creativity coach Kanesha Baynard will help teens customize their planners and journals to fit their needs. Participants will learn how to streamline their tasks, customize or create planners and build confidence around making time for things that matter the most. Summer Reading Completion Prizes Now Available We want to thank our participants who completed our Summer Reading program, Reading Colors Your World. Kids and teens who have read five books, completed an activity and logged it all can stop by their local SCCLD library and pick up a prize. Prizes are available now through August 31 while supplies last. Adults who have completed Summer Reading will be entered into a prize drawing to win an Amazon Kindle.

Welcome to Wonderland, where storybook characters and whimsical surprises are waiting for you to discover in this painted window mural by former Saratoga Youth Commissioner, Michelle Liu. Michelle hopes, “…you love it as much as I loved creating it - and (maybe) it'll inspire you to crack open a new book and discover the wonders within its pages!”
