Free Programs for Kids and Families Our Summer Reading Program, Find Your Voice, ends on July 31. Let’s finish our annual program with a bang! One of the highlights from our Summer Reading program is the performers. Getting Ready for Kindergarten If you have a child about to start kindergarten in the next month, make sure to check out our Kinder Readiness page. This webpage is full of librarian-approved resources, lists and videos to help families get their little ones ready for school. This includes activities and tracking logs in the fields of health and well-being, early literacy, social and emotional development, language and communication skills, mathematical thinking, and science.

Food Assistance Available Food insecurity can grow in the summer, as students are not able to access free meals through their schools. Morgan Hill and Gilroy libraries are providing free lunches to children 0-18 and their caregivers. These nutritious meals must be enjoyed at the library, and there is indoor and outdoor seating available. No registration is necessary. Meals are available, while supplies last. Contest Deadline Coming Up The deadline to enter our annual Teen Bookmark Contest is on Monday, July 31! We invite teens ages 12-18 to design a bookmark related to the theme, Find Your Voice. Download the entry form here. Then design your bookmark within the template provided. It must be your own original work. Please make sure to include your contact information. Then visit one of our SCCLD libraries and turn in a completed form to a staff member. You can also submit a digital copy of your entry form online. All winning bookmarks will be reproduced for distribution in the libraries. Your name will be on the bookmark, recognizing your amazing work! Learn more here.

Online Automotive Resources We have two new resources available for people who repair and maintain cars and small engines. Auto Repair Source is for anyone looking to repair their automobiles. Accessible from any smart phone, tablet or computer with an internet connection, this eResource is available to patrons wherever they are, allowing them to look at schematics and guides from their own garages! Need help with smaller engines? Try the Small Engine Repair Reference Center. From motorcycles to ATVs, and tractors to lawnmowers, patrons will finally have a place to find schematics and guides for small engines. Try them out today!

We have two divisions, teens and adults, competing for the grand prize of $500 and great exposure for their band. Each band will perform a 20-minute set in front of a live audience and judging panel.

Bicycle Safety & Bike Repair Programs Spend your day at Gilroy Library learning about bicycle safety and getting your bike road ready. Join us on Saturday, July 29 at 10:30 a.m. for a Biking Basics presentation. This is a great introductory class for people new to bicycling or for experienced riders interested in learning more about how to enjoy safe and comfortable cycling on the road. Please register for this presentation. A presentation in Spanish will be held at 12:30 p.m. Get your bike ready at a free bike repair at 11 a.m. in the Gilroy Library parking lot. BikeMobile can fix almost anything, including flat tires, brakes, and shifters. Bikes must have gears and wheels. Kids' bikes have priority. The Department of Public Health will give away free helmets for kids, while supplies last.

STEAM Summer FunLearn through play! We have a number of fun activities that can help teach kids about science, technology, engineering, art, and math! -Milpitas Library is offering Tech Challenges for kids, where participants build things using recycled materials. Please register for these events. -Gilroy Library is hosting Laser Cutting for Teens and an Ozobot Robot program for kids in grades 5-6. Learn more here. -Stop by the Saratoga Library on Wednesday, July 19 at 2 p.m. for LEGO Fun. -Build contraptions with KEVA Planks at the Morgan Hill Library on Wednesday, July 19 at 3 p.m. Also put a hold one one of these books and try some science experiments with your kids this summer.

Volunteers Needed The Santa Clara County Library District is looking for volunteers who are willing to provide homework help to students in grades K-6 in the topics of Math, Science, and English. Volunteer tutors must be at least 16 years old, available at least one day (Monday-Thursday) from 4 – 5:30 p.m., and commit to a full semester. Adults will be background checked, and all tutors must attend required trainings. Training includes pre-assessment and post-assessment, welcome and best practices, cultural competency, mentorship, learning expectations and general tutoring support. There will also be an orientation.
