Mental Health Matters Millions of Americans live with a mental illness. Mental Health Awareness Month is a time to fight stigma, provide support, educate the public and advocate for policies that support people with mental illnesses and their families. Resources are available on the National Alliance of Mental Health’s website. The Community Resources page on our website can help people find Mental and Behavioral Health Assistance, Family Service, and Housing Assistance. Find books in our libraries that address mental health and let people know they are not alone. Our free mindfulness app, Headspace, provides hundreds of guided meditations to help people get on with the day. Please note: Headspace subscriptions are active for a three-month period, and are deactivated on the last Friday of each month (or prior weekday if the library is closed). Patrons can re-enroll at any time and find all of their progress and sessions will be saved.

The novel is described as “a biopic novel about the scandalous life of Jennie Jerome Churchill, mother of Winston, an heiress from New York who married into one of England's most storied families but who always lived life on her own terms, as a royal mistress with a series of younger husbands and a son whose political rise she happily stage-managed." Put a hold on the book right now! This program is on Wednesday, May 22 at 7 p.m. and will be held in the auditorium. There will be an audience Q&A to follow. There will be a limited number of signed books available for purchase.

Two Santa Clara County Library District Librarians Receive Major Recognition Two of our librarians have been recognized with the Movers & Shakers Award by the literary publication, Library Journal (LJ). This honor highlights 50 individuals who are advocates, community builders, change agents, innovators, educators and “ban battlers” who help move library work forward. Library Services Manager Clare Varesio served as the point person on two major health-related initiatives in 2023. One of these projects was to partner with the County Behavioral Health Services Department and bring Mental Health Access programs to our libraries. Varesio also helped to organize community workshops regarding naloxone (also called Narcan), the anti-opioid overdose drug that can save lives if given to someone experiencing an overdose. Elizabeth Muñoz-Rosas is one of the most popular librarians at Gilroy Library, where she serves as the Children’s Supervising Librarian. Muñoz-Rosas has advocated effectively to bring materials, services and programs to her community that reflect the interests of all residents. She has also spearheaded programs of great relevance to the community of Gilroy. This includes working with the Smithsonian Institution’s Traveling Exhibition Service to bring the bilingual exhibit Dolores Huerta: Revolution in the Fields to the Gilroy Library. To coincide with the opening of the exhibit, Muñoz-Rosas organized a panel of distinguished speakers, including Dolores Huerta, to discuss the plight of the farmworker and Huerta’s legacy. More than 600 community members attended the program. Please join us in wishing both Clare and Elizabeth our sincerest congratulations!
