Thanking Dads for All they Do
Sunday, June 21 is Father's Day and also the official start of the summer. What better time to thank the father figures in our lives for helping to make us who we are?
 
Our librarians have many new booklists that might be of interest to dad. These include Fiction categories of Fantasy, Science Fiction, Graphic Novels, Historical Fictions, Horror, Mystery, and Thriller and Nonfiction categories of Health & Fitness (local parks and trails), Home & Garden, Science & Technology, Music & Movies, Business & Money, Sports & Games, Travel & Outdoors.
 
Our Kanopy and Hoopla resources have a wide variety of TV shows and movies, along with classic and recent eBook and Audiobook selections. Do the kids want to make something crafty for dad? Try Creativebug or one of our eBooks, eMagazines or eVideos in the Crafts, Hobbies & DIY section of our Online Library.

Summer Reading has Arrived!
This summer is filled with fun, events, reading, and prizes at your library. Our librarians have planned hundreds of events and activities for all ages and compiled suggested summer book lists for kids and teens. Adults can check out the latest recommendations in fiction and non-fiction. 
 
Register for summer reading at sccld.org/summer, log at least five books and one activity, and collect badges along the way. All reading is good reading and books, eBooks, audiobooks, magazines, and newspapers all count!
Family Events All Summer Long 
Puppets, magic, animals, arts and crafts, storytime, tech, music, performances--the library has many family programs to keep you learning, growing, and entertained this summer!

Teen Photo Contest
America has a big birthday coming up- 250th! To mark the occasion, all teens 12-18 years old are invited to enter the photo contest. Submit original photos that show your perspective on the country. A winner will be selected at each library and the top photos will be displayed on SCCLD's website!
 
Teen Bookmark Contest
Teens 12-18 years old can design a bookmark with the theme: "Plant a Seed, Read." Multiple winners will be selected from all entries! All winning bookmarks will be reproduced and distributed in the libraries. Your name will be on the bookmark, giving you full recognition. Visit sccld.org/contests for the rules and how to submit your art.

UPCOMING EVENTS
Marking the Day When Every American Was Finally Free

As we prepare to celebrate the 250th Anniversary of our Declaration of Independence on July 4, we first remember the date when the long struggle for freedom and independence was extended to every American. Juneteenth marks the date on June 19, 1865, when the Union Army brought word to the estimated 250,000 former slaves of South Texas that they were free. 
 
Also known as Emancipation Day, Freedom Day, or Jubilee Day, the first Juneteenth took place two and a half years after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation and more than two months after the Civil War ended. All Santa Clara County departments, including SCCLD libraries, are closed for the holiday. Our 24/7 Online Library is always available.
 
We have several works in our collection about Juneteenth. Here are a few worth exploring. Hoopla has many eBooks and Audiobooks about Juneteenth for different ages. Kanopy has documentaries and original films about the day and its special place in African American life. Our History page has more about the day.

Sana Javeri Kadri and Asha Loupy, authors of The Diaspora Spice Co. Cookbook share about their travels to find the best organically produced ingredients from India and Sri Lanka to use in the cooking.
Celebrate Pride Month
June is LGBTQ+ Pride Month, which commemorates the anniversary of the Stonewall Rebellion in NYC. The SF Pride celebration takes place at the end of June with the theme of "Resistance in Action." Silicon Valley Pride is the last weekend in August.
 
Check out our Kanopy film streaming service for documentaries and films about LGBTQ+ artists. Hoopla is celebrating Pride Month and the LGBTQ+ community with a diverse selection of books, graphic novels, movies, TV shows, and music albums. Read the blog.
