Goodbye Summer, Hello Fall

Autumn is here and you know what that means: fall leaves and cozy reads!

This is the time of year when the leaves change color and the weather begins to cool down. It is the perfect reason to stay home with something hearty to eat and a good book to enjoy.

Explore these booklists curated by our librarians to find something new at the library. We also have a number of fall-inspired picture books for kids.

Take an online class with CreativeBug and craft a fall leaf wreath or garland and paper leaves. Create magic in the kitchen with these fall-inspired cookbooks. In fact, we have several upcoming cooking demos and baking programs. We invite you to join us and learn about Gluten-Free baking and an Induction Cooktop Demonstration.

Celebrating the Freedom to Read
Banned Books Week is an annual event that celebrates the freedom to read and puts a spotlight on titles that have been challenged or banned. This year’s theme is “Freed Between the Lines.”

Banned Books Week “highlights the value of free and open access to information and brings together the entire book community in shared support of the freedom to seek and express ideas.” The American Library Association has released the Top 10 Most Challenged Books, which can be found here.

It is SCCLD’s vision to create a world in which access to knowledge, resources, and opportunities is guaranteed to all. Everyone belongs at the library! And your SCCLD library card can connect you with information and help you discover new things.

UPCOMING EVENTS
October's Virtual Author Talks
We have a fantastic lineup for the October edition of our Virtual Author Talk series.

Join us as Smithsonian-affiliated scientists teach us about the remarkable world of tropical bats! Scientists at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute have studied the biodiversity of bats on Barro Colorado Island in Panama, where an astonishing 76 species coexist. These scientists’ expertise is captured in Bat Island: A Rare Journey into the Hidden World of Tropical Bats. This talk will be on Wednesday, October 2 at 11 a.m. Register here.

On Wednesday, October 9 at 4 p.m., you are invited to free your mind with the highly acclaimed Silvia Moreno-Garcia. A 2022 Distinguished Author, Moreno-Garcia is best known for her novels, Mexican Gothic and The Daughter of Doctor Moreau. She is back with The Seventh Veil of Salome, which follows two actresses, both determined to make it to the top in Golden Age Hollywood. But this is the tale of three women, for it is also the story of the princess Salome herself, consumed with desire for the fiery prophet who foretells the doom of her stepfather, Herod. Please register.

And on Tuesday, October 22 at 11 a.m., from bestselling author, psychotherapist, and national advice columnist Lori Gottlieb is a hilarious, thought-provoking, and surprising book that takes us behind the scenes of a therapist's world--where her patients are looking for answers (and so is she). Maybe You Should Talk to Someone, offers a personal yet universal tour of our hearts and minds, providing the rarest of gifts: a revealing portrait of what it means to be human, and a funny and illuminating account of our own mysterious lives and our power to transform them. Register here.

College Admission Programs
We have two virtual programs aimed at helping students wanting to understand college admissions.

Once you are admitted into a university, you can read your admissions file and discover what got you into that school. On Tuesday, October 1 at 6 p.m., learn from college students who have seen their own files and find out who reads your application and the specific rubric it is graded against before you are admitted. Please register.

Then on Wednesday, October 9 at 5 p.m., you will find out why college essays are the best way to showcase a student’s strengths beyond their academics. A great college essay highlights a student’s personal attributes, how they are unique from their peers, and the kind of impact they can contribute to their community. Join us for a presentation with Q&A by a college counselor to learn how to make your essay stand out. Please register.

Demons, Creatures, and Monsters, Oh My!
We invite you to meet the mythical creatures, legendary beasts, and terrifying monsters that have populated Asian art for centuries. Join us for this virtual program with the Asian Art Museum on Tuesday, October 1 at 7 p.m.

Appearing throughout folklore, stories, songs, and works of art, these supernatural, mystical, and often godlike (or demonic) beings have fascinated audiences since ancient times. Today, they continue to thrill, terrify, entertain, and inspire. Please register for the Zoom link.

This is the fifth program in SCCLD’s inaugural Asian Art Museum art talk series of 2024. Learn about the final program here.
