Celebrate Halloween with the Library
We are counting down the days until Halloween! If you need some last minute help, make sure to stop by our libraries in-person or online. We can provide you with books or digital resources on how to make costumes and crafts, decorations, recipes or a spooky book to enjoy.

There are a number of free spooktacular programs to attend. Enjoy crafts and a kids’ Halloween movie and costume party. Some of the storytimes leading up to October 31 will be Halloween themed. And on October 31, several SCCLD libraries are hosting a library-wide parade with a chance to go trick-or-treating, so feel free to wear your costume.

Have a wonderful and safe Halloween!

Special Storytime: Read for the Record with the County Librarian
Families are invited to a special storytime with County Librarian, Jennifer Weeks.

Weeks will lead a special storytime on Thursday, October 24 at 3:30 p.m. at Los Altos Library to mark the annual Read for the Record event.

Read for the Record is a nationwide event that stresses the importance of building early literacy and language skills for every child, so that all children have the opportunity to enter kindergarten prepared to succeed.

This year’s selected book is Piper Chen Sings by Grammy Award winner and Tony-nominated actress Phillipa Soo, Maris Pasquale Doran and illustrated by Qin Leng. Piper Chen Sings is a story about a young girl who loves to express herself through singing but is struck with self-doubt and nervousness when asked to perform a solo in front of an audience.

After the storytime, we will have music, movement and more. This storytime is suitable for children ages 3-5 and their caregivers. Join us!

Paying Tribute to the Rich Ancestry and Traditions of
Native Americans
Native American Heritage Month recognizes the significant contributions Native Americans made to the establishment and growth of the United States. It is also a time to raise awareness about the unique challenges they have faced both historically and in the present, and the ways tribal citizens are working to conquer these challenges. Join the library this November to enjoy free programs and activities to mark the month.

Our libraries are hosting related book clubs, author talks, movie showings and a Contemporary Indigenous Voices Short Film screening and presentation. Families can also enjoy an outing at Chitactac-Adams Heritage County Park with the Gilroy Library. There are also a couple of virtual author talks planned, detailed in an article below. Find our full calendar online, and please note some programs do require advanced registration.

Changes Coming to Rosetta Stone Resource
We want to let patrons know of an upcoming change coming to our popular language learning resource, Rosetta Stone.

Starting in November, the vendor will migrate its platform. This means user progress and accounts will be reset. If you want to continue using this free resource, we ask that you record your last activity before the migration begins, and keep track of any progress until the migration is complete.

After the migration is complete, please register for a new Rosetta Stone account.

Please visit this blog for instructions on how to identify your last activity, and how to bring your account up to date after the migration. We thank you for your patience!

If you have never tried Rosetta Stone, this is a great online resource for language learning in up to 30 different languages! It’s also FREE with your SCCLD library card.
