Summer Starts This Week

The official summer season begins on Thursday, June 20. Thanks to the longer days and warmer weather, now is a great time to get outside and enjoy the outdoors!

This time of year usually means family vacations and road trips. Check out these books to plan your next adventure on the open road or just get inspired!

Learn about places to travel near and far at one of our Road Scholar educational travel programs. You can also enjoy a program about Scotland, meet the animals native to Australia and Tasmania, or the birds that live at Shoreline Park in Mountain View.

Perhaps you just want to explore your actual backyard. Stop by for one of our free gardening programs, where you can learn about native bees, container gardening, and growing tomatoes and peppers successfully.

KIDS AND FAMILIES

Special Event: Author Visit
Sometimes our family histories provide amazing stories!

Such is the case with the book, Masked Hero: How Wu Lien-teh Invented the Mask that Ended an Epidemic, written by emergency physician, Dr. Shan Woo Liu. The story is about the author’s great-grandfather, Dr. Wu Lien-teh, who helped to defeat the Manchurian plague of 1910.

She was inspired to write the book after her daughter’s school project about Dr. Wu. Now both mother and daughter are proud to share the story of Dr. Wu, and help children understand that heroes come in all sizes, genders, and races.

Shan Woo Liu will stop by Los Altos Library on Saturday, June 29 at 2 p.m. for a reading and discussion about the book, followed by a Q&A.

Children and families are invited to join us!

June 19 is Emancipation Day
It was on June 19 1865, when Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas and announced General Order No. 3, which ordered that all remaining U.S. slaves be freed. The 250,000 slaves were among the last in the United States, residing in states that were not part of the Confederacy. The announcement came nearly two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation.

It became an annual tradition and Texas later adopted Juneteenth as a state holiday in 1980, followed by a number of other states. Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021. Find programs and booklists for children, teens, and adults about Juneteenth in this blog.
