Campbell Library: The Big Day is Almost Here!
 
The fully redesigned Campbell Library opens this Saturday, May 9 at 10 AM, and we can't wait to share this beautiful new space with you. There will be entertainment, crafts, giveaways, and much more!

Inside, the first thing patrons will notice is a flood of natural light. Floor to ceiling windows open up to views from the front of the library all the way through to the Orchard City Green.
 
On the upper level, you'll find the Overlook, a community space to browse, read,
and relax, three reservable meeting rooms, and a flexible community room-- all ensuring the community can fully utilize the new space to collaborate, meet, learn and explore.
 
The Children's Room is also located on the upper floor and includes a new collection children's books, as well as our sixth Storybook SCCLD early learning play space. Dreamy Downtown features TowerBot and is filled with activities specifically designed to build the skills children 0-10 years old need to become successful readers and students.
 
The lower level is dedicated to adults and teens featuring a new collection of materials for all interests, plenty of comfortable seating, and a variety of spaces to work, study, or relax.

Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month Kicks Off
 
This year’s AANHPI Heritage Month theme is “Power in Unity: Strengthening Communities Together”, which touches on the many different cultures that are encompassed. Here in the Bay Area, we have a significant portion of the population whose family heritage is from Asia, Hawaii or the Pacific Islands.
 
Some events taking place at our libraries this month include:
  • A series on Chinese Medicine for Chronic Pain
  • Polynesian music and dance performances from RAHITI
  • Movie screenings on Kintsukuroi, the Japanese art of repairing pottery
  • Asian Art Museum of SF docent John shares about featured Asian artists on Tue., May 5
  • Poponta Japanese Storytime with traditional kamishibai puppets on Wed., May 6
  • Science Fiction and Fantasy Book Club discussion at the Milpitas Library on May 10 on Contemporary Chinese Science Fiction
  • Learn the art of origami at a craft event on Wed., May 13
  • Fabric sculpture workshop focusing on Japanese cranes on Thu., May 14

Summer Reading Sign-Up
 
This year’s Summer Reading program, which lasts from June 1 through July 31, has a theme of "Plant a Seed, Read."
All ages are invited to register at sccld.org/summer/. Summer Reading is full of fun, events and prizes! Check out the website for more details including the upcoming special events. This program focuses on the importance of reading to prevent the summer slide for students in K-12, and keeping the mind active for all adults. Books entertain and educate, opening up new worlds for all ages. Join in!
Family Performers at Libraries
 
Get ready to dance, sing, read, and celebrate with the award-winning Lucky Diaz and the Family Jam Band—the ultimate crossover between music, storytelling, and cultural magic! They will appear twice on May 9 (Saratoga and Morgan Hill), and once each on May 23 (Cupertino) and May 24 (Gilroy). 
 
Also catch Golden Acorn Music, who will have families dancing, singing, and learning together at the Gilroy (7th), Saratoga (15th), Cupertino (18th) and Morgan Hill (30th) Libraries. Each event's songs are inspired by the library's Storybook SCCLD early learning play space theme.

Learn to Draw Superheroes
 
Former Marvel illustrator Jerry DeCaire will share insights into the comic book industry and do a live drawing this month at Gilroy (3rd), Cupertino (4th), Campbell (13th), Los Altos and Milpitas (23rd) and Morgan Hill (24th). Jerry has illustrated various
titles with well-known characters including the X-Men, Thor, Deadpool, Hawkeye, and more!

Those interested in exploring Chinese ancestry can learn about our My China Roots resource at an online training session at 11 AM on Wed., May 20. Please register.
 
This powerful new research tool tool includes records in both English and Chinese including Census, immigration, Chinese Exclusion Act, community directories, burial and genealogy. My China Roots also has many family books, detailed collections of family histories from China and other countries across Asia.

One Book, One Coast Live

Mark your calendars for Sunday, May 31 at 2 PM for a special event which will be joined by library patrons all along the West Coast. George Takei will talk about his childhood imprisoned in American internment camps during WWII, as told in They Called us Enemy Confronting questions of patriotism, family, loyalty, and community, George's life work as an actor, author, and equal rights advocate is a stunning examination of what it means to be American, both long ago and today. This book is available now on Libby.
