Reflecting on the Life and Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Born in 1929 in Atlanta, Martin Luther King, Jr. was best known for using non violence and civil disobedience to advance civil rights. He was instrumental in the Montgomery Bus Protests, staged after Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to give up her bus seat to a white person. He would lead a number of peaceful demonstrations, including the March on Washington that brought 250,000 Americans to the Lincoln Memorial to urge Congress to pass a Civil Rights bill. He received the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize for his work.

Dr. King was assassinated in 1968, but his legacy lives on. Our free video streaming service Kanopy has films and documentaries about him. Our eBook service, Overdrive also has eBooks about MLK, as well as Social Justice and Activism and Diverse Reads for Kids and Teens.

Library services are unavailable today in observance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Services will resume on Tuesday.
