Opt Outside If you enjoy spending time outside, the library can help you “Opt Outside.” Come to one of our libraries and pick up a free vehicle entry pass to participating County or State Parks. While you are there, make sure to pick up a travel guide to help plan your trip. Families can also Opt Outside and enjoy our StoryWalks® which includes pages taken directly from a children's book and installed along an outdoor path. As you walk down the path, you are encouraged to read and follow the story which is a great way to develop early literacy skills and promote physical activity with our youngest readers. Find these StoryWalks® at Jack Fischer Park in Campbell, Christmas Hill Park in Gilroy, Murphy Park in Milpitas, Community Park in Morgan Hill and Kevin Moran Park in Saratoga. StoryWalk® was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, VT and developed in collaboration with the Kellogg-Hubbard Library in Vermont.

Explore Our Early Learning Children's PlacesChildren need to build essential skills early on to become successful readers. The library’s early learning children’s areas provides opportunities that support the five simple practices to get every child ready to read: Talking, Singing, Reading, Writing, and Playing. Playing comes in different forms: Active Play: When children engage in balance and climbing activities, they are developing a physical skill known as "crossing the midline" which is the ability to move their eyes or body parts across the middle of their bodies. Active play builds physical coordination and critical motor skills that children need for a wide range of activities, from walking and running to holding a book and tracking a line of text. Imaginative Play: Storytelling and play-acting encourage children to explore different perspectives, share ideas, and engage with the world through their own narratives. Imaginative play develops important social skills including communication Quiet Play and Pre-Reading Activities develop comprehension and decoding skills. Listening to stories also improves vocabulary; children who are read to daily hear more than one million words by the time they enter Kindergarten, which sets them up for reading success! Visit Cupertino Library’s Aquarium Adventure, Earthen Excursion at Gilroy Library, Milpitas Library’s Railway Rollick, Morgan Hill Library’s Trusty Trails and Redwood Romp at Saratoga Library. Check out these videos and pictures of our play spaces.
