We are your one-stop shop for creating Halloween costumes and crafts, and cooking up something scary good and delicious. Try out our free online resource, CreativeBug, to find crafting videos. We also have a booklist that can help you find what you need for making costumes, decorating your house, carving pumpkins and more Halloween fun! Halloween is the most popular holiday among many of our library staff, so patrons can expect and enjoy free, fun programs planned throughout the month. Free Afterschool Homework Help Several of our libraries offer free in-person homework help. Students in grades K-6 are invited to come by for support in English, math and science. Please reach out to your home library for their schedule. No registration is required. Walk-ins are welcome as space allows. If you can’t make it afterschool, we also offer online tutoring. Brainfuse HelpNow offers homework help on any subject with an online tutor from 1 – 10 p.m. every day. Spanish tutors are also available.

Student eResource: Scholastic Interactive Services We carry a number of student online resources through Scholastic which encourage students to learn about science, social studies, animals, and more in a dynamic and interactive way. Discover different resources for every age: Bookflix: Ages 4-8. Interactive reading resource that pairs classic video storybooks and nonfiction videos. Scholastic Go!: Ages 8+. Find comprehensive nonfiction content that includes four encyclopedia databases: Amazing Animals, America the Beautiful, Lands and Peoples, and The New Book of Popular Science. TrueFlix: Ages 8-12. Explore social studies and science content. ScienceFlix: Ages 10-15. Learn through hands-on scientific experiments and build crucial science knowledge.

October is Family History Month Your SCCLD library card gives you access to free resources that can help you learn about your family history. Explore our Genealogy page to find resources such as: Ancestry Library lets users search genealogical records and discover more about your family history. Databases include records from the U.S. Census, military records, court and vital records, directories, passenger lists, and more. Fold3 Library Edition provides access to a growing collection of U.S. military records from the Revolutionary War to the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts, including stories, photos, and personal documents of those who served. Digital ReeL offers access to SCCLD’s microfilm collection of historical local newspapers, digitized for enhanced access and searching capabilities. Please note: Some of these resources can only be accessed in-person at the library.

World Mental Health Day 2024World Mental Health Day is on Thursday, October 10, calling on governments, organizations, and individuals to develop initiatives that focus on various aspects of mental health care. This year’s theme is “Mental Health at Work,” understanding that safe, healthy working environments can act as a protective factor for mental health. According to the World Health Organization, “by investing efforts and resources in evidence-based approaches and interventions at work, we can ensure that everyone has the opportunity to thrive at work and in life.” SCCLD also offers the meditation app, Headspace, for free. It’s an app that offers hundreds of guided meditations on a variety of topics. Try it here.

Free Diwali Programs Diwali is on Thursday, October 31. This Hindu holiday is also known as the Festival of Lights and is celebrated in parts of India as well as in Hindu communities worldwide. Enjoy some of these free library programs: Children and Families – The King’s Problem: A Diwali Puppet Show is based on the tales of the Panchatantra, a book of fairy tales from India. Milpitas Library, October 21 at 7 p.m. Los Altos Library, November 2 at 4 p.m. Gilroy Library, November 3 at 1:15 p.m. Morgan Hill Library, November 3 at 3:30 p.m. Teens (13+) and Adults – Diwali Celebration at Milpitas Library features Henna artists ready to give participants a personalized design along with a craft. This program is on October 19 at 2 p.m. Stop by the Morgan Hill Library on October 30 at 5:30 p.m. to create your own diya. Supplies are limited, while supplies last.

Día de los Muertos Programs Día de Muertos/Day of the Dead is a holiday honoring loved ones who have passed. It is celebrated in Mexico, other areas of Latin America and the United States. Our libraries are hosting free programs to mark the occasion. Decorate a Sugar Skull for Kids: Morgan Hill Library: Oct. 8 at 6:30 p.m. and Oct. 19 at 1 p.m. Gilroy Library: Oct. 20 at 1:30 p.m. Los Altos Library: Oct. 27 at 3 p.m. Bilingual Storytime: Los Altos Library, Oct. 29 at 10:30 a.m.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a time dedicated to raising more attention to the disease. According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, more than 360,000 people will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year. However, the organization is optimistic, reporting that when it is caught early, the five-year relative survival rate of breast cancer is 99%. Fire Prevention Week is Underway Make sure to install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level. Make sure to test alarms at least once a month by pushing the test button. Also replace all smoke alarms when they are ten years old or stop responding when testing.
