Celebrating the Achievements of African Americans

February is Black History Month, a time to recognize the achievements and influence of African Americans. This year’s theme is The Black Family: Representation, Identity and Diversity, which explores the African diaspora, and the spread of family members across the United States, nations and continents.

Black artists, musicians, sports figures, writers, activists, scientists, politicians, and actors have made important and varied contributions to American culture and society. Our librarians have created several lists to educate and entertain you, from books, films, documentaries and music.

There will also be programs to mark Black History Month. Join us for a virtual author visit with Jan Batiste Adkins, who has written books about the history of African Americans in California. Learn about the quilts of Gee’s Bend, Alabama during a craft activity.

Join us for our family events, including a performance with award-winning storyteller Diane Ferlatte. We also have picture books and biographies for kids, plus books for middle and high school-aged students.
