Mental Health Matters
May is Mental Health Awareness Month. The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is asking people to take action, raise their voice, and help change the conversation around mental health.

This year’s theme is, “In Every Story, There’s Strength,” with the hope of celebrating “the power of storytelling to fuel connection, understanding and hope for those navigating their own mental health plan.”

Several of our libraries are hosting a special program – Befriending Our Minds: A Mindfulness Presentation. Our minds can be our best allies or worst enemies, depending on whether we understand how to work with our mental and emotional states. Learn the foundations of mindfulness - the practice of befriending and understanding our minds.
Los Altos Library: May 14 at 7 p.m.
Gilroy Library: May 24 at 2 p.m.

Los Altos Library is also hosting an author talk on Tuesday, May 6 at 7 p.m. Author JJ Elliott will talk about her book, There Are No Rules for This, about a group of friends grappling with the suicide of a friend. Register for this program.

Several of our libraries are hosting meditation programs. Check the schedule. Can’t make it to an in-person program? Try Headspace, an app designed for people to practice the essentials of meditation and mindfulness in a few minutes a day.

KIDS AND FAMILIES

Celebrate the Milpitas StoryWalk!
Families are invited to join us to celebrate the latest StoryWalk® in Milpitas!

A StoryWalk® includes pages taken directly from a children's book and installed along an outdoor path. As you walk down the path, you are encouraged to read and follow the story which is a great way to develop early literacy skills and promote physical activity with our youngest readers.

Murphy Park (1567 Yellowstone Avenue in Milpitas) is the latest city park to enjoy a StoryWalk. The current story on display is The Bugliest Bug by Carol Diggory Shields.

Join us on Saturday, May 10 at 11 a.m. for a special Storytime at Murphy Park. After that, stay for a special puppet show courtesy of Puppet Arts Theatre featuring Tommy's Space Bug Adventure. Blankets are encouraged to sit on the grass.

Other StoryWalk locations include Jack Fischer Park in Campbell, Community Park in Morgan Hill and Kevin Moran Park in Saratoga.

StoryWalk® was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, VT and developed in collaboration with the Kellogg-Hubbard Library in Vermont.
Gilroy Library Play Space
Grand Opening
We invite you to the grand opening of the Earthen Excursion play space at Gilroy Library! Join us for the big day on Saturday, May 17 at 10 a.m.

Each of our Storybook SCCLD early learning play spaces incorporate the five principles of Every Child Ready to Read: talking, singing, reading, writing and playing!

Children ages 0-10 will discover hidden gems, as well as colors, letters, numbers and words in both English and Spanish that can encourage reading, practice fine motor skills by moving the gem conveyor belt, and more.

Playing can help a child’s brain develop more connections that contribute to learning, memory, logic and language. Play is essential for a child's healthy brain development and is the natural way children learn.

We hope you can join us for the grand opening, which will feature fun family programs and giveaways! We will also be releasing a brand new SCCLD library card that features the Earthen Excursion's mascot, MoleBot.

Invasive Mosquito Detected
The County of Santa Clara warns that dangerous mosquitoes (Aedes aegypti) are beginning to hatch in the area. These insects are aggressive and can bite multiple times. This type of mosquito has the potential to spread disease (Note: None of the serious diseases  are currently in Santa Clara County).

Vector Control is asking residents to help keep the spread of Aedes aegypti under control:
• Dump and drain standing water around your home at least once a week.
• Help local government mosquito experts. Vector Control will go door-to-door in the affected neighborhoods to talk to residents and inspect for mosquitoes and control them if they are found.
• Report daytime mosquito bites. You can report online by emailing
vectorinfo@cep.sccgov.org or calling (408) 918-4770.
• Sign up for AlertSCC for free alerts to get notified if dangerous mosquitoes are in your
neighborhood.
