We have lots going on this month!

April is shaping up to be one of our busiest months yet this year, packed with exciting events for all ages. We're especially happy to present our Día de los Niños celebration on Sunday, April 27 from 5:00-7:00PM where, for the first time ever, lucha libre will take center stage at Main Library. It's a can't miss moment that highlights our continued celebration of culture, literacy, and family fun.

Our 10th annual Amnesty Month will run from April 1 through May 4, aligning perfectly with the most galactic of days - Star Wars Day. During Amnesty Month, return any overdue item to any MPL location and have late fines removed from your account. You can also enjoy Star Wars themed photo ops at Main Library that will transport you to a galaxy not so far away. Then, on Sunday, May the 4th from 2:00-5:00PM, we'll host a family-friendly afternoon at Main Library with crafts, activities, and appearances by favorite Star Wars characters.

Finally, I want to thank all of our patrons for your patience and feedback during our database migration. After a trial run with the new company, we have decided that it did not meet our standards of patron access and usability, and we therefore decided to return to our former provider, TLC, which we have been using since 2009. We are currently working on re-migrating all of our data back to our former catalog. Our estimated go-live with TLC is mid- to late May. Keep an eye out for the change to take place on our website, www.mcallenlibrary.net, and our Facebook page.

SAVE THE DATE!

Families are invited to celebrate the 10th annual Día de los Niños / Día de los Libros on Sunday, April 27, from 5-7PM at Main Library. This year’s theme, “Champions Read,” honors young readers and brings together the joy of books and the excitement of lucha libre in a fun-filled evening for the entire family. Patrons can expect storytimes featuring local authors, free books for every child and teen, and fiery lucha libre matches by the Texas Wrestling League. We hope to see you there!

Who is your favorite author?  And why?

My favorite author is Rubén Degollado, who’s actually from right here in our own backyard—the RGV! What I really enjoy about his writing is the way he gives voice to so many different characters while making our region feel like a character of its own. His stories are thought-provoking, but also full of moments that genuinely make me laugh out loud.

Who has made a positive difference in your life recently?

My nephews and my father. I recently went through some health issues, and they were incredibly supportive throughout the whole experience. I’m so grateful for everything they did to help me through it.
