MPL Connect
                                   May 2023
From the Director:

May is the month that MPL celebrates Asian Pacific American Heritage Month and reflects on the many influences, contributions, and achievements of people with this heritage. Since 1979, the month of May has been a dedicated time to celebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. How can you and your family join in the festivities? MPL has lots of recommendations!
  •  Check out book recommendations using one of the QR codes in this newsletter or visit our Book River when you open our catalog to search for titles. The Book River streams titles right on your screen so you can simply click on a book cover to see where it’s available.
  • Check out digital book recommendations using the free Libby app or CloudLibrary app. You will need your patron card number and your PIN to borrow e-content for free!
  • ·Come to any of our professionally curated programs for children, teens and adults, such as Korean Calligraphy, Ramen + Anime, book clubs, an interactive movie day, and children’s craft activities. You can see the full roster of activities on the flyer, below, or go to our website at www.mcallenlibrary.net and click on events to see programming at all three MPL locations.
  • ·Watch films, documentaries, and movies with Asians and Pacific Islanders in them. You can borrow a DVD or Blu-Ray, or stream great films through our Kanopy service with your patron card and PIN.

Marriage of a Thousand Lies by SJ Sindu

“SJ Sindu has written an important novel about Sri Lankan immigrant culture. Here, the intersections of migration, sexuality and culture are explored in loving and heartbreaking detail. A book that reveals the secrets of a community caught between East and West.”
—Nayomi Munaweera, author of Island of a Thousand Mirrors

The Joy Luck Club  by  Amy Tan

"The Joy Luck Club is one of my favorite books. From the moment I first started reading it, I knew it was going to be incredible. For me, it was one of those once-in-a-lifetime reading experiences that you cherish forever. It inspired me as a writer and still remains hugely inspirational.”

Our Missing Hearts by Celeste Ng

Our Missing Hearts is the story of 12-year-old Bird, a quest to find his mother and the power of small acts of rebellion. Saddled by grief, this quasi-dystopian novel is ultimately propelled by hope, Our Missing Hearts is an old story made new, of the ways supposedly civilized communities can pretend to ignore the most searing injustice. It’s a story about the power—and limitations—of art to create change, the lessons and legacies we pass on to our children, and how any of us can survive a broken world with our hearts intact.

The Immortal Life of Herietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot

“It’s extremely rare when a reporter’s passion finds its match in a story. Rarer still when the people in that story courageously join that reporter in the search for what we most need to know about ourselves. When this occurs with a moral journalist who is also a true writer, a human being
with a heart capable of holding all of life’s damage and joy, the stars have aligned.
This is an extraordinary gift of a book, beautiful and devastating—a work of outstanding literary reportage. Read it! It’s the best you will find in many many years.”
—Adrian Nicole Leblanc, author of Random Family
