Save the Date: Community Health Fair

We’re excited to invite you and your family to McAllen Public Library’s free Community Health Fair on Saturday, August 2, from 10:00AM-1:00PM at the Main Library. It’s a great chance to check out local health resources and take some fun steps toward feeling your best.

There will be free health screenings, lots of local organizations to meet, and plenty of useful wellness tips. Plus, we’re hosting a blood donation drive—an easy way to give back.

Kids can have fun with a health-themed scavenger hunt, teens can get moving with Just Dance, and adults can explore helpful services and get inspired to live healthier.

We’d love to see you there for a fun, healthy day with the whole community!

Calling All Young Artists!

Calling all young artists ages 5–18! McAllen Public Library is excited to invite you to join this year’s Bookmark Art Contest, inspired by the theme “Celebrate Our Roots & Stories.” This is your chance to express your cultural heritage, family traditions, or personal journey through your own original artwork.

The contest opens on Monday, July 14, and you have until Friday, October 3 at 5:00 PM to submit your masterpiece at any McAllen Public Library location. Just make sure your artwork fits within the bookmark space and is completely original—no copyrighted characters or logos.

Artists will be judged in three age groups: 5–8, 9–13, and 14–18. It’s a wonderful opportunity for kids and teens to share their stories, celebrate their roots, and shine creatively. We can’t wait to see your art bring your heritage to life!

Customize Your Libby Experience

As your digital library keeps expanding, why shouldn’t you have more control over it? That’s why we’re so thrilled to introduce Content Controls in Libby -- a fun new way to make your app feel just right for you. Sharing a device with little ones? Prefer skipping certain covers or genres? Content Controls lets you pick and choose exactly what shows up—from cover images to the titles you can borrow -- so every tap feels tailored to your tastes. At McAllen Public Library, we’re all about making text reading safe, joyful, and totally accessible. Whether you’re hunting down bedtime tales, exploring educational gems, or letting your child discover books independently, Content Controls is here to give you confidence and peace of mind. Enjoy curating your very own library experience!

What do you enjoy most about being on the Library Advisory Board?

My favorite part about being on the McAllen library Advisory Board is getting the privilege to support a resource that touches so many lives. Our library provides an essential hub for lifelong learning for all and it has been a blessing to be a part of.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

Do what is right, not necessarily what is popular.
