MPL Connect
                              November 2022

From the Director:

Happy November to all! As we move into this month, remember to turn your clocks back one hour at 2:00 am on Sunday, November 6 for that extra hour of sleep. November also marks the start of MPL’s annual tradition of Food for Fines, which runs through November 30th. Patrons may donate non-perishable food items to receive $1.00 off their accumulated fines associated with any of MPL’s three locations (Main, Lark, and Palm View). Donated items must be sealed, not expired, and ideally multi-serving. We cannot accept items in glass containers. There is no limit to the number of food items that can be donated. Food for Fines was launched in 2013 as way of encouraging our patrons to come back to their home library, while at the same time benefiting others. All food items will be collected and donated to the RGV Food Bank. If you don’t have fines, you can donate food items on someone else’s behalf, or just donate to help feed a family. This year, we are extending our Food for Fines to our Teen Essential Shelf. The Teen Essential Shelf is an area at the Main Library where teens and their families can “shop” for free items, like toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, feminine hygiene items, soap, and other items, no questions asked. It’s yet another way MPL does our best to serve our community at the point of need. Wishing a safe and happy Thanksgiving to everyone!

Nevada by Imogen Binnie

"Here and now, the novel makes as much sense (if not more) as it did nine years ago when it was first published. In the middle of a trans panic, with transphobes demanding that love, work, achievement and gender all follow the same cis narrative timetable, Nevada steals a car, walks off the job and drives someplace else." ― Noah Berlatsky, Los Angeles Times

The Maidens by Alex Michaelides

"From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Silent Patient comes a spellbinding tale of psychological suspense, weaving together Greek mythology, murder, and obsession, that further cements “Michaelides as a major player in the field” — Publishers Weekly.

A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini

“[Hosseini] is a writer of unique sensitivities. . . . Hosseini embraces an old-fashioned storytelling unconcerned with literary hipness, unafraid of sentimentality, unworried about the sort of Dickensian coincidences that most contemporary American writers consider off-limits. . . . We are lucky . . . to have a writer of Hosseini’s storytelling ambitions interpreting his culture and history for us with another large-hearted novel. . . . Despite the unjust cruelties of our world, the heroines of A Thousand Splendid Suns do endure, both on the page and in our imagination.”— Miami Herald

The Hideaway by Lauren K. Denton

'Denton’s first novel charms readers with her idyllic settings and wonderful cast of characters, making Sweet Bay and the Hideaway places readers will dream about. The Hideaway is a deeply satisfying exploration of family, friendship, and the meaning of home.' —  BookList
