Booklist Review

As if bonsai gardening didn't already render the likes of cedar, maple, pine, and cherry trees into infinitely smaller versions, here super-mini bonsai reduces them to a size best suited for thimble-size pots. This book might have served its function simply by showing, in color photos of numerous species of trees, that super-mini bonsai gardening can actually be done. But Iwai, a pioneer in the field, lays out how to grow these extraordinary plants, from tools to soil requirements to pot selection to propagation to maintenance of established plants. To say this is a complete guide might be a stretch; gardeners inspired, if not jolted, by the concept will certainly want to consult other sources. But it's certainly an excellent introduction to the practice and deserves a spot on a shelf with conventional bonsai-gardening books.--Moores, Alan Copyright 2017 Booklist

The size of traditional bonsai ranges from about four to 24 inches, but supermini bonsai is one inch or less. Bonsai expert and instructor Iwai introduced this diminutive version of the plant. Here, the author provides a quick overview, followed by planting, materials, and tools. Propagation and growing methods are well detailed. Instructions include how to use moss for moisture retention, shaping the plant, and proper potting. Beautiful photographs clearly illustrate steps and techniques. VERDICT The guidance is superior, and there is little information on this variety of bonsai. However, the suggested supplies and materials are Japanese, with no alternatives suggested for the U.S. market.
