-Rarely seen these days except Wednesday evenings, Kevin is still a vital part of the inner workings of Elting Library.

Here are some books I enjoyed last year...

by Jim Butcher Book #17 in the Dresden Files - A blend of noir detective fiction and fantasy, the Dresden Files follows Harry Dresden, Chicago’s only resident Wizard/Private Investigator. Lots of fun and magic and monsters, what’s not to love?

By China Mieville New York Times-bestselling author Mieville delivers an existential thriller set in a city that is unlike any other, real or imagined--a murder mystery taken to dazzling metaphysical and artistic heights. Eschewing the preliminary world-building techniques of many fantasy books, Mieville dumps the reader straight into Tyador's world of crosshatching and unseeing, only gradually developing and explaining his one-of-a kind setting. Suggest to readers who enjoyed Michael Chabon's alternate-history mystery, The Yiddish Policemen's Union (2007), or to fans of the futuristic urban setting in A. L. Martinez's Automatic Detective (2008).

by Neil Gaiman A fantastical voyage into the things we lose or forget as we move through childhood towards adulthood. Whimsical but also darkly serious, this book was a highlight of my quarantine reading.

Currently streaming on Amazon Prime. Science fiction is often gleaming and polished, showing a perfect future where humanity and alien races co-exist peacefully. Not in the Expanse. Humanity hasn’t made it out of our solar system (yet), but there is already conflict between Earth, Mars, and the Belt over resources and power. Seasons 1 through 3 available in the MHLS, but alas 4, 5 and 6 are on Prime only.

The first season was very much a spin-off of the famous Coen Brothers film, but the series has taken on a life of its own. Retains much of the humor (and certainly the absurdity) of the original while exploring new stories and characters. Features the acting talents of Billy Bob Thornton, Colin Hanks, Martin Freeman, Allison Tolman, Bob Odenkirk, Oliver Platt, Keith Carradine and many more. Seasons 1 through 3 available in MHLS. Later seasons available on Hulu.

Ozark This series is only available via streaming on Netflix. Wildly popular, but deservedly so, Ozark follows the Bird family, who are involved in money-laundering for a drug cartel. Almost like a Southern-bent Breaking Bad, this show is a wild ride. Jason Bateman stars, produces, and sometimes directs this gritty series joined by Laura Linney with a breakout performance by Julia Garner.
