Description

We celebrate Women's History Month with a look at artist Edmonia Lewis. East Greenbush Town Historian Bobbie Reno is the author & illustrator of "Edmonia Lewis: A Sculptor of Determination and Courage".

Born in Greenbush, NY in 1844, Edmonia Lewis was the first professional African-American sculptor. She was daughter of a free African-American father and her mother was a Chippewa Indian. Edmonia studied and worked in Neoclassical style sculpture in Europe from1865 to 1872. In addition to creating portrait heads of Civil War leaders and Abolitionists, Lewis sculpted biblical scenes and figural works dealing with her Native American heritage and the oppression of black people.
