Library Operations Updates

Library Closed Monday, April 1 in honor of Cesar Chavez Day All San Leandro Public Library branches will be closed on Monday, April 1 in honor of Cesar Chavez day. Library book drops will remain accessible and normal library hours will resume on Tuesday, April 2.

Farmer’s Market Starts April 3 Starting Wednesday, April 3 the Farmer’s Market will be back at the Main Library parking lot! The Farmer’s Market will happen every Wednesday from 3:00-8:00pm. Free parking is available after 3:00pm in the parking structure off of East 14th street.

Earth Day Festival & Library Open House Saturday, April 13, 11:00am-2:00pm Join us for a family-friendly Earth Day Festival, Big Truck Meetup and City of San Leandro open house! Enjoy behind the scenes library tours, crafts for kids, food trucks and more. All attendees can enter to win a drawing for a free bike and Keeping It Local gift cards!

Eclipse Glasses Available Starting Tuesday, April 2 The public library has a limited supply of eclipse glasses available for free for personal use. Please make your request in person at the Main Library or Manor Branch Library. Limit of 1 per person/4 per family.

Community Read 2024: West with Giraffes by Lynda Rutledge We invite you to join the library for our annual community read! This year we will be reading West with Giraffes, a historical fiction novel, inspired by a true story, that follows a young man and his adventure driving two giraffes cross-country in 1938 United States. The library will be giving out free copies of the book and hosting programs inspired by the book. Free book giveaway (with book discussion sign up) starts March 7 at our kickoff event with the East Bay Vivarium!

Film Screening; We Bought a Zoo Thursday, April 12, 6:00pm Main Library We'll be showing We Bought a Zoo starring Matt Damon and Scarlett Johansson. This film is rated PG. Get a ticket for a drawing to win a Group Pass to the Oakland Zoo at this event!

San Leandro LIFE @ SLPL Throughout the month of April, teens in grades 6-12 are invited to earn prizes and learn financial literacy skills by playing San Leandro LIFE! Play at Main (in Teen Lounge, Wednesdays and Thursdays, 2-4pm), and Manor (in Teen Zone, Wednesdays 12:30-2:30). The more you play, the better your chance of winning!

WHAT DO I WANT TO DO WITH MY LIFE? College & Career Readiness at San Leandro Public Library Saturday, April 20th, 1:30-3:30pm, Main Library Teens in grades 9-12 are invited to join us for an interactive workshop with Stanford Lecturer Shanice Webb! We'll explore the endless possibilities of your future using design thinking techniques. Curious but not totally sure? Sign up to join us and we'll figure it out together. Snacks provided. Register in advance, space is limited.

Sensory-Friendly Teen Lounge Monday, April 15th, 3:30-5pm, Main Library Teen Lounge will be open specifically for teens with sensory needs. We 'll have board games, a craft activity, snacks, and a Nintendo Switch, along with our sensory toys and noise-canceling headphones. Open to teens in grades 6-12; parents and caregivers are welcome to stay with their teens. Register in advance.

Saturday, April 6, 12:00pm-4:00pm San Leandro History Museum, 320 W. Estudillo Ave. Join us at the San Leandro History Museum for a day of Retro Video Games like Donkey Kong and Mario Bros! You’ll have the opportunity to play the Wii console in our Museum Classroom or Classic Retro Games in the Museum Auditorium. Best for ages 13+. Children under 10 years of age must be supervised by an adult.

Spring is near! The photo on the left is from 1945 when the local Luchessi Family planted this beautiful cactus off of MacArthur Blvd in San Leandro. To the right is the cactus almost 80 years later! Theresa Lupo originally posted the photos on the Facebook Group San Leandro Area History & Genealogy Group, a great place to connect with other local lineages or learn more about San Leandro’s History.
