School Library Journal Review
PreS-When a little girl finds a flowerpot filled with soil and a tiny green sprout, she announces to her comical pup, Fred, "I will grow this flower." She watches it every day, feeding it all her favorite foods-pizza, cheeseburger, spaghetti, chocolate chip cookies, and strawberry ice cream. The astonished pet watches as she even offers up one of his juicy bones. Finally, when nothing happens, she throws the plant outside in disgust: "Silly flower!" There, nourished by soft rain and warm sunshine, the tiny plant begins to grow and one day surprises Fran with a big, beautiful flower. The expressive, full-page illustrations rendered in creamy primary and pastel colors on textured paper depict the small girl's misguided efforts as well as her ultimate delight. Right on target for a young child.-Sally R. Dow, Ossining Public Library, NY (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted.
Horn Book Review
Fran finds a flowerpot with a tiny shoot peeking out and wants to see it grow. She tries to feed it pizza and ice cream but nothing happens. Frustrated, Fran throws it outside, never noticing the elements' effects on the abandoned pot until she's greeted by its beautiful flower. Although the story is slight, cheery pastels illustrate familiar feelings of frustration and joy. From HORN BOOK Fall 2000, (c) Copyright 2010.
