Publisher's Weekly Review
Selby (The Winter Road) delivers an action-filled grimdark fantasy following a newly promoted marshal on a mission to root out corruption at all levels of government. Driwna Bridche is a skilled fighter and negotiator who, like many soldiers of the Post, relies on a variety of drugs to enhance her strength and awareness in battle. After she discovers a dead body in a caravan, she's catapulted into a larger mystery that sees her confronting nefarious officials who seek to undermine the king. Supporting her are allies Cal Rulger, her friend and lover, and Ufra, a warrior of the Ososi people, who are known for grafting plants into their bodies. While the battle scenes are engaging, Selby's overreliance on invented fantasy vocabulary is often more cumbersome than evocative. The intricate political schemes will engage Selby's fans, but, combined with the dizzying number of new characters, they become difficult to follow. Lovers of grimdark worlds will enjoy Selby's unique setting and brutal action sequences; recurring scenes of slavery, torture, and rampant death mark this as not for the faint of heart. Agent: Jamie Cowen, the Ampersand Agency. (Jan.)
Booklist Review
Brother Red returns readers to Selby's inventive fantasy world, set well after the events of The Winter Road (2018). Teyr Amondsen's dream of building a road connecting all of the clans became a reality, and the Post was created to move merchandise, promoting peaceful trade among the regions. Driwna and her best friend, Cal, the two surviving riders of an ambush on a Post caravan, discover a baby's body in their recovered caravan. The baby appears to have been one of the Ososi, a people who have plants growing in them that impart botanical qualities into the host. The Post depends on fightbrews gifted from the Ososi to Amondsen, as they have lessened side effects compared to other brews. In the aftermath of the ambush, Driwna is promoted to fieldsman, a new role, and tasked with investigating corruption within the Post, where she rapidly discovers an extensive plot that threatens peace throughout the land. She earns the title of Brother Red as she and Cal travel to determine the mysterious force that is propelling the world to war.
