Publisher's Weekly Review
Fast fashion had its moment, but it's time for that moment to draw to a close, writes blogger Edwards in this crafty debut on building "a healthier relationship with our wardrobes." Rather than buy new clothes, Edwards encourages readers to mend the ones they currently wear. She starts with instructions on creating a hand-sewing kit and a demystification of sewing machines, showing beginners how to thread and get the tension right. Edwards also dispenses tips on laundry and clothing storage so that every sweater, T-shirt, and pair of jeans can live its longest life. Mending projects include repairing a hem, fixing a hole, and, "for additional strength and beautification," Japanese sashiko-style stitching, which incorporates decorative stitches on top of patches. Edwards also offers instructions on removing sleeves, lengthening a hem, and adding ruffles. Throughout, color photographs of personalized garments show Edwards's projects in action. This primer on reworking old clothing is a must-read for stylish thrifters. (Feb.)
Booklist Review
To Edwards, fast fashion equates to fast damage to Mother Earth and its inhabitants. Some eye-opening statistics: Only two percent of the 40 million garment workers worldwide earn a living wage. Sixty percent more clothing is bought than 15 years ago, with a concomitant increase in waste. Edwards makes a powerful case for fixing and altering already-owned garments, with easy-to-follow instructions. First she explains the basics, simply and with illustrations, of the starter sewing kit, other equipment (including a sewing machine), and useful supplies. Dozens of how-tos follow. For mending she might feature split seams, fixing zipper issues, or button sewing. The "Wear It" chapter advises examining unworn clothes and determining how to refit or retrofit an item--making it larger or smaller, removing too-tight sleeves, adding a patch pocket or two. The final section teaches care and storage (like only cleaning/washing items when absolutely necessary to save wear and tear). Tips throughout assuage any fear of fixing. Personal wearables made climate conscious.
