Subject(s): Summary: "Chaperones, suitors, and arranged marriages aren't only reserved for the heroines of a Jane Austen novel. They're just another walk in the park for this leading lady, who is on a mission to find her leading lad. From the brilliant comics Yes, I'm Hot in This, Huda Fahmy tells the hilarious story of how she met and married her husband. Navigating mismatched suitors, gossiping aunties, and societal expectations for Muslim women, That Can Be Arranged deftly and hilariously reveals to readers what it can be like to find a husband as an observant Muslim woman in the twenty-first century. So relevant in today's evolving cultural climate, Fahmy's story offers a perceptive and personal glimpse into the sometimes sticky but ultimately rewarding balance of independent choice and tradition."--Provided by publisher.

Booklist Review

At 25, Huda, an avid reader, college graduate, and queen of sarcastic wit, is already past her marrying prime. Her conservative Muslim family respects strict mores of gendered behavior, so dating is only allowed if the end goal is matrimony, and all courting, even emails, are supervised and chaperoned. This sweet graphic memoir reveals a complex world of modern Islamic coupling and the long and arduous pursuit of self-knowing. Readers will undoubtedly fall head over heels in love with Fahmy's self-deprecating charm as she toes the line in testing her mother's patience with her cheekiness. The simplified, cartoony artwork, colored in bold washes, is low on detail and uses figures that suggest human forms but is nonetheless expressive. Any work that sheds more light on the nature of arranged marriage, demystifying traditions and practices surrounding the Other, is a gift to the Western world. Hand this to teens, young adults, and anyone interested in comparative religion or humor in general.

Author notes provided by Syndetics

Huda Fahmy has loved comics since she was a kid. She attended the University of Michigan where she majored in English. She taught English to middle and high schoolers for eight years before she started writing about her experiences as a visibly Muslim woman in America and was encouraged by her older sister to turn these stories into comics. Huda, her husband Gehad, and their son reside in Houston, Texas. She continues to identify as a hopeless romantic. Her writing and illustrations can be found on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook under the handle @yesimhotinthis.
