School Library Journal Review
PreS-K--Yin debuts with a colorful reminder about inclusion. Animals have arrived at the empty book, ready to play. The author suggests 100 animals could fit in the book, but could an entire blue whale? More and more animals gather and the question remains. Finally, the blue whale arrives and the animals make room. This simple rhyming book packs a powerful message: "When everybody makes some space, one more can always find a place." Verhoeff's vibrant drawings are perfectly paired with Yin's words. Animals are depicted with smiles on their faces as all of the different species gather together, looks of determination as they make room for the whale, and joyful when they can all share the space. Children will enjoy identifying the animals and seeing how they interact with one another. Back matter includes the names of the 100 animals and a challenge to find each one. VERDICT Recommended for early childhood collections, this brisk and funny rhyming story will be a hit at story times.--Sara Thomas, New Castle P.L., DE
Booklist Review
It starts as a blank white page, but as the animals join--starting with a mink, a moose, and a mouse caboose and growing more crowded by the page--they begin to wonder if there could possibly be room in the book, between the beaks and wings and scales, for a whole blue whale. As it turns out, with so many animals working together, there is room for anyone. The artwork is cheerful and bright with high-contrast colors, depicting wonderfully unusual animals like rooks, rhinos, crabs, koalas, tapirs, skinks, and quails, all interacting with joy. A concluding seek-and-find page lists and displays all 100 animals in the book for the reader to retroactively identify, bestowing a satisfying Where's Waldo? quality to spotting a moth sitting contentedly on the tail of a monkey riding on an ostrich. But perhaps the truest charm of this book lies in its language, rich with assonance, alliteration, and internal and end rhymes and liltingly cadenced with read-aloud rhythm.
