Publisher's Weekly Review
Calling herself a dedicated ``closet writer,'' actress White, coauthor of Betty White's Pet Love, conveys an endearing zest for life, people and nature in short, ebullient commentaries on both serious and trivial topics that denote sensitivity and the ability to laugh at herself. An ardent animal lover, she actively solicits support for zoos and conservation from her show-business friends. This book of reflections is free of professional pettiness, and she asserts that the Golden Girls actresses are as friendly off camera as on, and so were the Mary Tyler Moore cast members with whom she worked. White's pet peeves encompass sloppy diction, bathroom humor and mirrored sunglasses, and she expresses strong dislike for the blatant sex and voyeurism on today's screens and for ``people who wear grief like a mantle.'' Her reminiscences of her parents and of her former husband, Password host Allen Luddon, are fond. First serial to Redbook. (October 2) (c) Copyright PWxyz, LLC. All rights reserved
Kirkus Review
Painfully painless sunnytudes by the ever-upbeat TV comedienne. Perhaps the perfect soporific for terminal golden-agers, this is a sheaf of wise saws for the relentlessly optimistic. White's subjects are off the top of her head: On Saving Things, On Name-dropping, On Fans in General, On Laughter, On Imagination, On Superstition, On Moods, On Aging, On Things I Hate, On Sex (""Today, it's a little like walking across a swamp on a footbridge. . .one misstep, and you are in the muck. But one man's muck is another man's humor. . .and it is all a very subjective game""), On Enthusiasm, On Animals. . .Naturally, and so on. Her chat ""On Professional Jealousy"" does work in some storyish autobiographical facts about her famous programs, The Golden Girls and The Mary Tyler Moore Show, and she also squeezes out some interest recounting being a surprise guest on This Is Your Life."" Her strongest passage is ""On Grief. . .and Hope,"" in which she tells of her husband's death by cancer and the rallying of her friends, though these few facts are laid out on black velvet: ""Grief, the monster, doesn't just finally go away. It goes into a very light sleep, deep inside you, where, now and then, something unexpected will cause it to stir uneasily. You tread very lightly until it dozes off again."" This rerun should be sold with toothpicks to keep your eyes open. Copyright ©Kirkus Reviews, used with permission.
Booklist Review
Sincere musings from one of the stars of the popular television series ``Golden Girls.'' Betty White seems quite unaffected in these rambling reflections on aging, pets, marriage, Hollywood, hate and guilt, and memory, to name only a few of her topics. The author occasionally brings up references to her late husband, Allen Ludden, or to hobnobbing with celebrities (a favorite recollection is the playing of blackboard charades with Burt Reynolds and other pals), but most of the book is filled with cozy lessons learned from her attentive parents or her years as a ``working girl.'' Fans may enjoy these collected opinions, but those seeking either insight into or gossip about Hollywood will be disappointed.
