NYPL docent Joan Marlow Golan will take you on a virtual tour of the iconic New York Public Library’s Central Research Library for the Humanities and Social Sciences on Fifth Avenue at 42nd Street. The tour includes the story of how the beloved Library Lions got their names, a brief description of the building’s Beaux-Arts architecture and modern South Court addition, and visits to its most famous rooms Along the way, you will learn about some of NYPL’s greatest benefactors and most famous patrons, and why it has a “lovebirds’ corner.”

Joan Marlow Golan discovered the New York Public Library during her undergraduate years at Sarah Lawrence College and treasured it as a resource for research and respite while writing her doctoral thesis as she completed her Ph.D. in English and American literature from Harvard University and wrote her book THE GREAT WOMEN. A longtime conservator of the Library, Joan became a docent in 2015 after retiring as Executive Editor at Harlequin Books, where she spent 16 years of her 35-year career in book publishing.
