Set in 1973 California San Fernando valley at a local high school, 15-year-old Gary Valentine meets Alana Kane, a photographer's assistant, on picture day and asks her out. She accompanies him to New York for auditions, and he successfully lands a gig on a variety show. With the money earned, Valentine starts a waterbed company and hires Kane as an employee. As Kane shows an interest in acting and later works on campaigning for Joel Wachs, Valentine closes his waterbed business and opens an arcade. After years of being friends and helping each other through ups and downs in life, both realize their love for each other.

The Beta Test is about an engaged Hollywood talent agent, Jordan Hines, who is distracted by thoughts of beautiful women. One day, he receives an invitation from an anonymous women to have an encounter at a hotel with no strings attached. After some hesitation, Hines accepts and meets her, but he's blindfolded. Initially, Hines is fine, but he is soon paranoid. To ease his fears, he begins investigating the strange circumstances, and he finds others who have received similar invitations. He finds a person who runs an app that sends the invitations, as well as shakedowns and murders.

The story follows the lives of two siblings and the three friends who help them during a summer they spend in Mexico traveling through an ancient Mayan village in search of their long-lost parents, who was lost while searching for an ancient artifact called The Eye Heaven. While traveling, each sibling learns they are cursed by someone or an object from their past; therefore, unbeknownst to them the entire time, their discovery has been rooted in deception. For the curse to be broken, each sibling must discover who deceived them and why bringing them closer to discovering why their parents are missing.
