Enhanced descriptions from Syndetics:

The Compton Crook Award-winning author weaves her trademark blend of science fiction and dark humor in this dazzling story that continues the imaginative saga begun in Escaping Exodus, in which a society lives in the belly of a beast--and an entire civilization's survival depends on a pair of uneasy allies who must come together for one epic battle.

Nearly a thousand years removed from Earth, the remnants of humanity cling to existence inside giant, space faring creatures known as the Zenzee. Abused and exploited by humans for generations, these majestic animals nearly went extinct, but under the command of its newly minted ruler, Doka Kaleigh, life in the Parados I has flourished. Thanks to careful oversight and sacrifice by all of its crew, they are now on the brink of utopia, and yet Doka's rivals feel threatened by that success.

The Senate allowed Doka to lead their people believing he'd fail spectacularly--a disaster that would cement the legitimacy of their long-standing matriarchy. Despite vocal opposition and blatant attacks on his authority, Doka has continued to handle his position with grace and intelligence; he knows a single misstep means disaster. When a cataclysmic event on another Zenzee world forces Doka and his people to accept thousands of refugees, a culture clash erupts, revealing secrets from the past that could endanger their future. For Doka, the stakes are bigger and more personal than ever before--and could cost him his reign and his heart.

He has fallen for the one woman he is forbidden to love: his wife, Seske.

Doka and Seske must work closely together to sway the other Zenzee worlds to stop their cycles of destruction. But when they stumble upon a discovery that can transform their world, they know they must prepare to fight a battle where there can be no winners, only survivors.

Library Journal Review

Continuing where Escaping Exodus left off, Compton Crook Award-winning Drayden shows us the Zenzee, giant creatures who carry what's left of humanity through space. The Zenzee have been driven nearly to extinction through cruel use by their passengers, but new ruler Doka Kaleigh successfully institutes a fairer way of life--and invokes the wrath of his fellow humans, who were sure he would fail. With a 50,000-copy first printing.

Publishers Weekly Review

Revisiting the future world of Escaping Exodus, in which humans live inside huge, spacefaring creatures, Drayden's jarringly fast-paced sequel explores fraying relationships and political intrigue. In a matriarchal society whose population encumbers the beast they have colonized, Doka Kaleigh is a rare male leader with many enemies and a civilization to save. Family structures now feature several spouses with relationships that vary from romantic to platonic, and Doka endangers his political career and the sanctity of his family when he develops feelings for his purely platonic will-wife, Seske. Together, Seske and Doka unearth dark secrets of their society, but their political opponents will do anything to maintain the status quo. The worldbuilding is as strange, inventive, and occasionally perplexing as ever, and Drayden delivers large helpings of grotesque body horror as the human characters explore the organs of their living vessel. The convoluted, breakneck plot never quite comes together, however, with several aborted subplots and a climax that relies heavily on deus ex machina. Die-hard fans of the first installment will enjoy revisiting this world, but casual readers will find the plot too garbled. Agent: Jennifer Jackson, Donald Maass Agency. (Feb.).

Booklist Review

In Drayden's Escaping Exodus series, humans carve out lives in the bodies of space creatures called the Zenzee, capturing a new home whenever an old one wears out. In the first volume (Escaping Exodus, 2019), the matriarchal, polyamorous society realized their Zenzee had consciousness, and committed to respecting and restoring their world as much as possible, living with minimum negative impact. This second volume starts with now-ruler Doka and his wife, Seske, fighting for this new reality, which has made many unhappy, leading to political stagnation. Meanwhile, they are uncovering new secrets and issues that introduce even more turbulence. Drayden's novel trades off humor with dark reality, connecting this sf world to our own questions of cooperation, gender inequality, and, most of all, our relationship to our planet. While some major plot points or character developments can feel rushed, Escaping Exodus: Symbiosis is, at its core, rooted in a fascinating world that presents intriguing questions to its readers, as well as driven, complex, and often queer characters.
