Booklist Review

Once upon a time in a realm far from any other, dragons were the scourge of the earth, setting countless villages up in flame. Until one day, when a spirit appears to a village chieftain, Lontar, and suggests he hide away in a cave, never leaving, in order to quell the rage of the dragons. He is to wait until a hero capable of stopping the beasts appears. It's been many years since Lontar sacrificed his freedom in order to calm the anger of the dragons, and now a young girl, Claire, has befriended the elderly hermit. But when Claire is kidnapped, Lontar must break his vow, unleashing the dragons once again. He does so because he believes she is the hero the world has been waiting for. While short, this well-written and touching story features engagingly written characters--especially Claire--in an entertaining fantasy world. Antunes' playful, colorful artwork has a classic comic-book feel and will appeal to tween readers who like classic fantasy adventures.
