Banned Book Club for Teens

Wednesday, October 54:00—4:45 PMTeen RoomMain Library82 Main Street, Peabody, MA, 01960

A "banned book" is a book that has been removed from a school or library collection due to objections made by a person or group. Banning books is a form of censorship that the Peabody Library stands against, and now we invite teens to celebrate your freedom to read! Join us in the teen room on the first Wednesday of each month.

You don't need to have read a specific book for these meetings, but you're encouraged to read (at least part of) a banned book. We'll chat about whichever banned books you've read, or ones you'd like to read, and reasons why people would challenge the presence of these books in public libraries. Snacks will be provided.

Some examples of banned/challenged books for teens:

I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou
The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood
Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky
The Miseducation of Cameron Post by Emily Danforth
Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman
1984 by George Orwell
Stamped: Racism, Antiracism, and You by Jason Reynolds and Ibram X. Kendi
Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot
Maus by Art Spiegelman
The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas
