Teen Volunteer League is an annual summer volunteer program for teens ages 14-18 with the Pierce County Library System. It is an 8-week program that will run from July 1-Aug. 26. As a volunteer, you will earn service hours for attending weekly virtual trainings and in-person work sessions with library staff and a group of your peers from across the county. More information about the locations and meeting times for this program is listed below.

Please complete your application between April 1-26 to be considered for this volunteer program. Spots are limited. Questions about Teen Volunteer League can be directed to teenvolunteers@piercecountylibrary.org.

What to Expect

Gain skills and experience, make friends and give back to your community!

Meet with other teens to work on engaging community projects, all while building your resume, earning volunteer service hours, receiving training and learning job skills.

Teen Volunteers can expect to receive:

  • At least 15 hours of community service
  • Resume support and job skills training
  • Mentorship from library staff
  • Access to community resources
  • Leadership experience

  • Virtual meetings for all volunteers: Wednesdays, 3:30-5 p.m.
  • Buckley Pierce County Library
    Alternating Mondays (July 15, July 29, Aug.12 and Aug. 26): 2-4:30 p.m.
    Support the Buckley Youth Activity Center. Re-envision, organize, and create a welcoming space!
  • Gig Harbor Pierce County Library
    Alternating Thursdays (July 11, July 25, Aug. 8 and Aug. 22): 3:30-5:30 p.m.
    Display your passion! Create visual projects to display throughout the library.
  • Graham Pierce County Library
    Tuesdays: 3-5 p.m. (times may vary)
    Plan, promote, and facilitate a mini library convention for teens by teens.
  • Parkland/Spanaway Pierce County Library
    Tuesdays: 1-3 p.m.
    Design and plan interactive library activities for kids, teens and adults.
  • Sumner Pierce County Library
    Tuesdays: 2:30-4 p.m.
    Explore and present recommendations for the new Sumner Library, including the design of the teen area, programs and services.
  • Tillicum Pierce County Library
    Alternating Saturdays (July 13, July 27, Aug. 10 and Aug. 24): 2-4:30 p.m.
    Learn, work and support your local Tillicum community garden.
  • University Place Pierce County Library
    Tuesdays: 3-5 p.m.(times may vary)
    Plan, promote, and facilitate a mini library convention for teens by teens.

Eligibility

Teens ages 14 – 18 invited to apply!

Some technology and internet access required to send and receive e-mails. Online trainings will happen weekly over Zoom and volunteers will collaborate using free online tools with librarian support.

Teen Councils

In-person teen councils are currently available at the following locations:

  • Eatonville: The last Thursday of the month at 4 p.m.
  • Graham: First Tuesdays of the month at 4 p.m.
  • Gig Harbor: Second and Fourth Thursday of the month at 4 p.m., starting on Feb 8
  • Summit: First Friday of the month at 4 p.m., starting Friday, Nov. 3
  • South Hill: Every other Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
  • University Place: Second and fourth Thursdays of the month at 4:30 p.m.

This fall we are also offering a virtual teen council, open to all teens ages 13-18 in Pierce County. Virtual Teen Council will meet on Zoom every Wednesday at 3:30 p.m., starting Wednesday, Oct. 4.

What to Expect

Participants in Teen Councils can expect to receive:

  • One hour of volunteer service per meeting attended.
  • Mentorship from library staff.
  • Opportunities to steer library programs and services.
  • Leadership experience.

Participants will:

  • Assist library staff in creating and hosting teen programs.
  • Design book displays.
  • Create social media content for the @PCLTeens Instagram account.
  • Assist in library activities and special projects.
  • Meet new people.
  • Play games.

Eligibility

There is no application process for Teen Council. Teens ages 13-18 are invited to attend.
