Library Journal Review

Humans have been raising chickens for thousands of years; it isn't difficult and doesn't require expensive equipment. With that premise, the author uses her experience as a longtime educator on backyard chickens to lay out her preferred methods of raising chickens, with an emphasis on natural foods and remedies, while reassuring readers that there is no one best way to do things. All the basics, from shelter to food to diseases, are covered, and there are plenty of color photos and a helpful index. VERDICT The real value of this book lies in the author's core philosophy of being mindful about every aspect of raising chickens. This isn't so much a how-to guide to dip into when needed as it is a practical ode to trusting your instincts and loving your chickens. Mixed in with the good advice are several anecdotes from the author's parents' days in Guatemala, as well as several Guatemalan family recipes featuring eggs (of course).--Eva Mitnick
