Gerber (Barbie and Ruth, 2009) celebrates the iconic fashion doll in fabulous style in this colorful, large-format book packed with vintage advertisements and photographs, original sketches, interviews with fans and collectors, and more. There is even a foldout time line that tracks Barbie through her sixty-year evolution from three-dimensional paper doll to role model. Ruth Handler, Barbie's creator, once recalled that My whole philosophy was that through this doll girls could be anything they wanted to be. Accordingly, Barbie has represented more than 200 careers in her lifetime, from a variety of fields (like Teacher, Scientist, and Beekeeper Barbie). More recently the Mattel Company released a new line of dolls ( sheroes ) depicting, among others, artist Frida Kahlo, gymnast Gabby Douglas, dancer Misty Copeland, and director Ava Duvernay, all of whom are included in close-up.
