What Our Local Library Means to My Family

“Let children read whatever they want and then talk about it with them.” – Judy Blume

For as long as I can remember, I knew I wanted my children to have the opportunity to explore their local library as well.  When I was a new mom, I took advantage of the baby and toddler programming at our local library, and my girls all enjoyed the musical tots and story times with puppets.  I enjoyed having a warm place to go in the winter with little kids.  As my children grow - my oldest is 8 now - we frequent the library a lot more now.  My younger children love the “rainbow stairs” on the way to the Children’s Department, and my oldest has the greatest time searching for graphic novels and books with this amazing sparkle in her eyes.

Having access to this free service is such an amazing thing.  As of now, we have saved over $20,000 in the 3 years my oldest has had her library card.  I can’t imagine how much money we would have had to spend if libraries weren’t available – especially for a kid whose love of reading has no bounds.  This privilege allows us to request and borrow as many books as we need to cultivate and encourage her love of reading.

“Any book that helps a child to form a habit of reading, to make reading one of his deep and continuing needs, is good for him.” ―Maya Angelou
