Read. Walk. Share. At the Walking Book Club, we celebrate books, walking, and the serendipity of place and people sharing. Participants read the material at their own pace and then, as a group we meander to a specially selected place for conversation and creativity. Join us for a new experience at each gathering.
A level of walking fitness is required. Wear weather-appropriate clothing, comfortable walking shoes, and bring something to sit on, if you wish.
On Thursday, January 18th, from 2:30-4:30pm, we will walk at Odlin County Park to share thoughts on Gathering Moss: A Natural and Cultural History of Mosses by Robin Wall Kimmerer. Odlin is a haven for mosses where we can intertwine our lives with theirs and learn from them.
“Robin Wall Kimmerer’s book is not an identification guide, nor is it a scientific treatise. Rather, it is a series of linked personal essays that will lead general readers and scientists alike to an understanding of how mosses live and how their lives are intertwined with the lives of countless other beings, from salmon and hummingbirds to redwoods and rednecks.
Drawing on her diverse experiences as a scientist, mother, teacher, and writer of Native American heritage, Kimmerer explains the stories of mosses in scientific terms as well as in the framework of indigenous ways of knowing. In her book, the natural history and cultural relationships of mosses become a powerful metaphor for ways of living in the world.”
