"This book is about a twelve year old girl named Miranda and it takes place in the late 1970s New York. One year she starts finding mysterious notes that seem to predict future events. The book is a perfect depiction of school life and friendship and I could relate to even the smallest details. The characters are super diverse and are described really well! I've read this book 7 or 8 times and I genuinely still find little clues that connect to the main plot, and I think "oh, so THAT'S why...". The clues will also circle back to the beginning of the book. You can read this countless times and, in my experience, never get bored of it."
What made you interested in reading this book? "It was chosen for Battle Of The Books in 2020. My brother had to read it, so my mom bought the book and I found it on a bookshelf in our house a while later. I thought it looked cool, so I read it." Who would enjoy reading this book? "Readers who might struggle with always predicting the ending to books, readers who love finding little clues, and readers who like books that make you think really hard."

"This book is set in Hickory, North Carolina in 1944. It is the story of a girl named Ann Fay. Ann Fay is left to be the "man" of the family after her father leaves for World War II. She has to take care of her mother and three younger siblings. It goes through her life and the conflicts of war and polio. The book was overall good, with some happy moments, but it was pretty sad. I liked the length and the author's writing style. I like how she wrote it from the point of view of the little girl and went through her life. This was an easy read but it was a little sad because it talked about the harsh realities of war and polio, two things that happened in our history. This book is part of a series, but I liked the first one the best. This was an overall great read. I would recommend this book. It is an easy, entertaining read that teaches you a little about the history of the US but in a fictional, fun way."
Who would enjoy reading this book? People who like to read about history but want that fictional component of a book would love this book.

The Fountains of Silence
by Ruta Sepetys
Book Reviewed by Jessi
"This book is a brilliant and fascinating historical fiction about a brutal time period in Spain's history that is truly fascinating. The majority of this book is set in Madrid in 1975 after the days of the Spanish Civil war, and during the day of the tyrannical reign of General Francisco Franco. This book has 4 different point of views, and changes between them depending on the chapter. The four characters with POVs are Ana (the daughter of supporters of the republican Spain who were killed in the war), Daniel (a traveler from Texas), Puri (a nun who is Ana's cousin), and Rafa (Ana's brother). This book focuses on uncovering Spain's secret history and what the lives of people living in this time would have experienced. In doing this, it beautifully interconnects stories of resilience, love, and heartbreak. If you happen to read this book and enjoy it, I definitely recommend her other books. My favorite of her books is Salt to the Sea."
What does this book remind you of? "This books reminds me of all the other books I have read by Ruta Sepetys. She has a very distinct writing style that I really enjoy. She is able to write compelling stories in a way that is simple, yet beautiful. This book also reminds me a bit of The Invisible Life of Addie Larue. That book was definitely more lyrical, but the beauty of the writing style is similar."
Who would enjoy reading this book? "Readers who love compelling historical fiction with a bit of romance. Also anyone who loves to learn about things they may never have heard of while reading an entertaining book."

Salt to the Sea
by Ruta Sepetys
Book Reviewed by Ella
"This book follows the stories of 4 unique characters - Joana, Florian, Alfred, and Emilia - set during the final chapters of World War II in East Prussia. Joana is a nurse with a fierce, protective spirit, caring more about the fate of the family she left behind and the family she formed during the war than her own. Florian is a ex-artist’s apprentice with a stolen secret and a mission. Alfred is a deluded sailor dead set on proving his importance to those who doubt him. Emilia is a young Polish girl trapped in a land where speaking her own language is punishable by death. These characters are all driven by their own feelings of guilt, vengeance, greed, and shame, yet somehow their vibrantly different colored strands end up intertwined when the Wilhelm Gustloff ship promises safe passage for refuges of the war. The relationships formed in this story are enchanting and will remain in your mind long after finishing this amazing book."
What does this book remind you of? "Ruta Sepetys has another book called Between Shades of Gray, which follows the cousin of Joana from this book. Her story details the Russian atrocities of World War II and is equally heartbreaking and beautiful as Salt to the Sea. It is a MUST read if you liked this book, or historical fiction in general."
Who would enjoy reading this book? "Anyone who loves historical fiction will love this book, along with anyone who wants a fast paced, easy to read story that expose you to raw human relationships and character that will leave you helpless to keep turning the pages."

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo

"This book follows the famous Hollywood actress Evelyn Hugo who is ready to tell the world about her life story. It was shocking to the unknown magazine reporter Monique Grant when Evelyn chose her to write her autobiography. Monique is summoned to Evelyn's apartment as she tells her her story to fame. Evelyn's life was full of drama, forbidden love, misogyny, and ambition through the 1950's. While reading this book, I was invested 100%. It's the first book I attempted to annotate. I enjoyed how the book is split into 7 sections for each one of Evelyn's husbands and how it follows her life. The Summer I Turned Pretty

"The book introduces you to the main character Isabele, her brother, Steven, and her mom, Laurel, who spend every summer at their best friends' house in Cousins Beach. This year is different though. Now when Isabele sees her best friend Jeremiah, and long love Conrad, there are sparks that weren't there before. With everchanging love interests and family dilemmas, what will happen? The book made me feel giddy and excited for Isabele to embark on this new and interesting chapter in her life. The author's writing style provides for a very straight forward book. It is a very simple read and I wish the author wrote a bit more in depth. The book was very dramatic and action-packed. I would say definitely give the first book a chance, but then don't stop there. The second book was even better than the first, and the third even better than the second."
What does this book remind you of? "This book reminds me of a few shows/movies I've seen such as 'My Life with the Walter Boys' and 'Surviving Summer'. Both 'My Life with the Walter Boys' and 'The Summer I Turned Pretty' shared a similar love triangle. Who would enjoy reading this book? "I think many young teens who enjoyed My Life with the Walter Boys would really enjoy this book. I also think many teens who enjoy dramatic romances would enjoy this book as well as the second and third in the series."

They were inseparable though elementary, however, in middle school Autumn becomes popular. As they grow older they start growing more distant. Both Finn and Autumn get new friends and suddenly Autumn is not the popular one in high school. Laura Nowlin has almost the perfect writing style for romance and while it is fast paced, she immerges you in each chapter. It really gets your attention as the book flies by. As they do this, they realize the other is not how they seemed. A slow but sweet romance occurs between the two, and they begin to work together as a team. Half Upon a Time
by James Riley
Book Reviewed by Mairead
"Half Upon a Time is a fractured retelling of almost every fairytale you've ever heard. It includes characters and stories such as Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, Rapunzel, Little Red Riding Hood, Rumplestiltskin, and many more, all combined into one book. The main plot of the story follows Jack from Jack and the Beanstalk and May, who is a normal teenage girl from the real world. May accidentally falls into the fairytale world after strange fantastical creatures appear and kidnap her grandmother, whom May thought was just a normal woman. May meets Jack, finds out her grandmother is actually Snow White, and decides she has to go rescue her grandmother from the people that kidnapped her. Jack goes along with her, hoping that by saving Snow White he'll become a real prince, and the book follows their misadventures as they run into various fairytale characters on their way to rescue May's grandmother. This book combines elements from the real world and dozens of fairytales to create one convoluted, chaotic, complicated story that is nostalgic and new at the same time. I found it to be hilarious, and the never-ending mistakes made by May and Jack are extremely relatable. May and Jack are witty, petty, hilarious, and continuously finding themselves in insane situations. The amount of plot twists in this book practically gave me whiplash - I loved feeling like I was always on my toes, ready for the next unexpected reveal. I thought this book was just going to be a simple and quick read, but it's actually surprisingly clever in how it utilizes the various fairy tales. It was impossible for me to not read the other two books in this trilogy, Twice Upon a Time and Once Upon the End. The unconventional titles are only the first sign of how strange and unique this trilogy is! This book might look like it's aimed toward a younger audience at first glance, but I promise it'll surprise you with how clever and serious it becomes!"
What does this book remind you of? "Half Upon a Time reminds me of the Story Thieves series and the Lunar Chronicles. Like Story Thieves, Half Upon a Time is funny and lighthearted while also having a very surprising plot full of twists and paradoxes. The Lunar Chronicles and Half Upon a Time are both great examples of how fractured fairytales can be taken to a whole new level by combining stories and taking some artistic liberties, and reading the Lunar Chronicles is actually what led me to this book."
Who would enjoy reading this book? "Fans of Story Thieves would love this book, as well as anyone who likes magic, fairytales, and scheming."

Six of Crows by Leigh BardugoBook Reviewed by Mairead
"Six of Crows is about six outcast teenagers, Kaz, Inej, Nina, Wylan, Jesper, and Matthias, who all live in a fictional harbor city called Ketterdam. They could not be more different from each other, but they inexplicably end up working together to pull off an impossible heist, led by Kaz. They're a mismatched and volatile group of spies, thieves, Grisha, and more, but they're also a force to be reckoned with when they can stop bickering for more than twenty seconds. I love this book because of the action and thrill of the heists. You feel the suspense and anxiety every time the team sets out on another dangerous mission, and you feel the relief if they eventually manage to succeed. Despite the characters' initial hatred for each other, you see them slowly start to cooperate to reach their common goal, and each character gradually grows on you as well. Six of Crows is written from multiple perspectives, allowing the author to only clue you in to certain things, so the elaborate schemes Kaz and his crew come up with leave even the reader confused and blindsided. You never quite know the full story or the full plan, but that only adds to the thrill. By the end, you'll be impressed and enamored with this group of criminals and misfits, and you'll be impatient to read the second book in the duology, Crooked Kingdom. If this book sounds interesting, I would also definitely recommend reading the Shadow and Bone trilogy. It's somewhat similar because it's set in the same universe and there's some cross-over between the two series, but Shadow and Bone focuses more on the magic system in this universe. I think it's absolutely worth reading because the world building for this entire universe is just so good! Also, once you've read the books, there is now an amazing TV adaptation that combines both series."What does this book remind you of? "This book reminds me of the Shadow and Bone trilogy by the same author, for obvious reasons, but it also reminds me of Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi because the world and magic systems are very similar. "The Once and Future King by T.H. White is a very florid and trenchant retelling of the legend of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table. Set in medieval England, it follows the journey of Arthur, a young boy who is mentored by the sorcerer Merlyn and is taught lessons of virtue and strategy through exploration. Ultimately, Arthur becomes king of all England at a very young age and must father a Britain of justice and morality from the savage, bloodthirsty lands he found himself sole heir to. Throughout the story, Arthur faces his own challenges of love, war, and betrayal as he strives to create a realm of peace and prosperity. The novel explores themes of power, revenge, and the faults of mankind, offering a timeless reflection on the complexities of the human condition. I learned from this novel that with greatness comes equal ill intent, and nobody - not even the king - is perfect."

She meets very important people who help her throughout the story named Tamlin, Lucien, and Rhysand. "I'll Give You The Sun is a book about twins, a brother and sister named Jude and Noah. Both are eccentric, unique, artistic, and very vibrant. They were practically inseparable as kids, but something happens that leaves them barely speaking to each other. This book focuses on the time before and after the event that drove the twins apart, as well as their attempts to forgive one another. The story is a little bit long, but it's told in a very unique way, with Noah telling the earlier years and Jude the later years, and that helps keep your attention. Their narratives meet in the middle, at the event that changed their lives. I've always loved this book because of how compelling the characters and their stories are. Every person in this book is flawed, complex, and ultimately human. They all have chaotic lives that overlap and clash, and the messiness of it all is what makes this book so relatable. I'll Give You The Sun will make you feel grief, hope, love, loss, and nostalgia within the span of ten pages, and it's the kind of book you never forget. Daisy Jones & the Six
by Taylor Jenkins Reid
Book Reviewed by Jessi
"This book is about a 1970s rock band that gives each character a chance to share his or her perspective from the start some of their lives, to the creation of the band, to the addition of rising star Daisy Jones, to the band's last show. The book's format is more of an interview style. There are many characters and many point of views in this book. The band members get a point of view, the producers, some of the band members loved ones, and many other associates the members meet along the way. This main characters in this story, Billie and Daisy, are the most closely followed characters. We follow them through their struggles of fear, sadness, regret, extreme addition, love, and self-value. The switches between the point of views is extremely valuable because it shows how various characters felt in different moments, and how they assumed other characters felt. The interesting thing is that these assumptions often conflict with how the other person is actually feeling which is exactly how real life is. For example, one character may assume the other is angry while that character is actually feeling guilty. One of my favorite topics discussed in the book is love. What does love even mean, and what does it mean to truly love a person? This book also looks at the sacrifice of love. I didn't necessarily agree with what the characters claimed to find what love meant, but it was very interesting to see what they found love to mean, and the choices they made because of it. I would highly recommend listening to this book via audiobook. The one I listened to had many different voice actors who matched with the certain point of view. This was super helping in differentiating between the characters, and really gave each character life and emotion. I would also recommend looking up images of the TV show. It was super helpful to have a face to picture, and it honestly perfectly fit what I had already pictured for each character."
What made you interested in reading this book? "This book has been really popular in recent years, and was made into a well loved TV show. I wanted to see if I would enjoy this book like I heard so many other people had."
What does this book remind you of? I have recently read some historical fiction, but I have never read a book with this interview style. I have listened to some podcasts with a similar vibe. This book doesn't really show the perspective of who is asking questions until the end, and it doesn't say what questions that person is asking. However, like podcasts, one person is truthfully answering questions.

Throughout this book we learn about the secrets both of these people are holding. Grace is a Christian, and is fighting to not let love or her emotions steal her desire to obey God and provide for her son. Over time, the two uncover their secrets and their lives and hearts start to become fitted together. However, book is so much more than a story. There are so many life lessons to be applied to every reader's life. The decisions these character go through, is what each person faces. Not every circumstance is the same, but everyone must decide who they will follow. The readers learn with Grace and Roman. One of my favorite things about this book, along with all of her books, is that I find myself pictured in all of the characters. Carmilla
by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu
Book Reviewed by Gracie
"The main character, Laura, is moving with her father to a castle in the countryside of Styria. She has just gotten excited about the arrival of a family friend coming to visit, but her father then gets a letter in the mail from him, cancelling these plans due to the unforeseen death of his daughter, who was to visit as well. Laura is distraught by this news, as she was excited to finally get to talk to another girl her age. Then, suddenly, a strange carriage passes nearby the castle and crashes near its bridge. Within it is Carmilla, who was injured in the crash. Laura's father offers to take care of her to the other passengers, as they were in a rush to reach a far-off village. As Carmilla stays in Laura's home, it becomes apparent how strange of a girl she really is. I read this book in a sum of one night and the following morning; it's quite short and really pulled me in. However; this might not be the case for everyone, as classics can be a little boring for some people. Just know that this isn't a super dramatic queer Twilight spinoff, it's very elegant and old-fashioned, which might not be for everyone, and that's ok! On that note, the romance isn't quite as prominent as I thought it would be going into it. It's definitely still there! There's just never really that moment of confirmation between Carmilla and Laura that some people might be really hoping for (AKA, me...). I guess a way of explaining it could be...it's more lustful than particularly romantic? They're yearning for each other, but there's never a true resolve. But again, it was still a great read either way!"
What does this book remind you of? "I've never read Dracula, and this is a precursor to it, but it's still very reminiscent of a lot of depictions of the book in movies and TV that I've seen. Additionally, it also loosely reminds me of the book Ruinsong by Julia Ember, as it's also a sapphic romance that takes place in a different, more classy time period."
Who would enjoy reading this book? "This book is great for anybody who loves eerie atmospheres, vampires, short classics, and queer romance!"

1984
by George Orwell
Book Reviewed by Carson
"This book is about a dystopian society where the government controls everything people say, do, and even think. It follows a man, Winston, who is strongly against how society runs and the government's power but feels helpless to change anything for fear of being caught and harshly prosecuted. Winston tries to do what little he can to fight the system he is a part of without anyone noticing that he is even slightly out of line. The book is as much about its message as it is its plot, and this is how the author tries to convey the danger of an authoritarian government and lack of individualism to society."
What made you interested in reading this book? "I am very concerned about the government taking all of our rights and privacy and I heard this book shows why that is so dangerous."
What does this book remind you of? "This book is similar to Brave New World by Aldous Huxley with a society that is almost an inverse of the one found in that book. Both are politically significant books about a dystopian society."
Who would enjoy reading this book? "Anybody who values freedom and liberty will find this book very important."

Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption by Bryan StevensonBook Reviewed by Emory
"Just Mercy is a narrative-like nonfiction read by lawyer and founder of the Equal Justice Initiative, Bryan Stevenson. Set in the deep South from the time Stevenson graduates law school in 1985, the book follows Stevenson's journey as he fights to free the wrongly condemned Walter McMillian, as well as Stevenson's interactions with many other African Americans who have been mistreated by the criminal justice system. This book does an amazing job of revealing complexities within Stevenson's claim that "each of us is more than the worst thing we've done". The book jumps between McMillian's story as well as other anecdotes throughout Stevenson's career as a civil rights attorney. For readers new to nonfiction, it reads similar to fiction but has important real-world implications. Stevenson's writing style is captivating yet not too difficult to read. Get ready to immerse yourself in the interworkings of the criminal justice system!"

Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption
by Bryan Stevenson
Book Reviewed by Cecilia
"This story is about a man named Bryan Stevenson, who is a lawyer in Alabama fighting for people on death row and people put into jail unfairly. Each chapter is different, with every other chapter being about a man named Walter McMillian. Walter McMillian was a poor black man in Alabama who was wrongfully accused of a murder, and put onto death row. His story is one about the injustice of the system and one of redemption and hope. Bryan Stevenson was the lawyer that took on his case, and helped him through each step of his journey. In between the chapters about Walter, the chapters are about other cases that Bryan had worked on in order to provide details of the brutality and unfairness of the death penalty and the injustice in our system. Overall, this novel is inspiring and shows the realness of the real world, and motivates the audience to think about the world around you and how to change it. This book is sometimes hard to get through, and can be very descriptive in the legal details, but this book is so life changing and can inspire you to do more for your life!"
What made you interested in reading this book? "We read this book in my English class, and the whole story about redemption is so interesting and inspiring."
What does this book remind you of? "Just Mercy reminds me of The Hate you Give because it talks about racism and the obstacles black people still have to face. Just Mercy goes more into detail about the actual legal system and the how's and whys about what happens in our country, but both stories are eye-opening stories with raw details about the world."
Who would enjoy reading this book? "Someone who likes a descriptive story about the real world, and someone interested in the law would love this book. Bryan Stevenson clearly describes his cases and talks about the nitty gritty details about the cases. Someone interested in law would love to hear about how the system works, and read about examples where the system has been unfair in many cases. I feel that if you have any interest in a story that inspires change and hope into the world, then this book is the book for you."

The first part is his experiences at the concentration camp and, since he was a physiatrist before he was captured, the second part is his theory behind how the brain processes trauma such as a concentration camp.
