Introduction to a Community Drum Circle

Beginers welcome. Will be held outside on the library lawn. In case of rain we will meet in the Oyster River Community room.

Mary Bencks | Drum Bio

Mary Bencks’ drum story began 16 years ago, when a friend mentioned she had a djembe and wished she had people to drum with. Mary responded, “What’s a djembe?” and, and enthusiastic, “I’ll drum with you!” They gathered a group of friends and whatever percussion instruments they happened to have, for an evening drum circle. It was so much fun, so energizing, and powerful, they all purchased djembes, began taking workshops, and have been drumming together ever since.

In addition to her drum circle, Mary is a member of “Shakti Rhythms”, a small group, focused on playing Middle Eastern drums and rhythms.

For Mary, facilitating a drum circle is not just about “teaching” people to play, it’s about giving people permission to play by creating a supportive, fun, environment, encouraging community and connection.
