Financial Literacy: Teaching Your Kids About Money

In Youth Services, we are all about literacy—learning to read and write.  But the term “literacy” can be used in a broader sense, too.  It can mean “learning” or “education”.  This February, we are putting the spotlight on financial literacy.  When and how do our youngest patrons and their families begin to learn and talk about money?  What resources does the Concord Public Library have to help you tackle this very important topic?

Benjamin Franklin, one of our country’s founding fathers, once said, “An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.”  One way you can make that investment is by coming in to the non-fiction section of the Children’s Room at the main branch of the library.  We have a robust display of books on a wide variety of financial topics—what is money?, money math, cryptocurrency, saving, how to be an entrepreneur, etc., etc.  We also have a catchy bibliography—a printed list—of many of the books in our collection for all ages that you can take home and use as you explore the topic with your kids.  In addition, we have fun, self-guided activities at our tables and around the non-fiction room that can help teach your kids some basic concepts. 

Money is a tool and practice and exploration are the ways that we get better with any tool we use.  Below are just a few of the many websites out there that you might find helpful as you and your children practice and explore:
