The Language of Sign
| by Molly Liolios |
American Sign Language, or ASL, is a visual language used by the Deaf community in the United States. A fairly young language, ASL originated in the early 19th century at the American School for the Deaf in Hartford, Connecticut. Founder Thomas Gallaudet combined French Sign Language, various village sign languages such as Martha's Vineyard Sign Language, and home sign systems to create this standard of shared language.
Sign is a natural language and the first one that babies utilize to try to communicate with others. Young children often gesture to what they need, such as reaching and grabbing towards an object that they want. Introducing sign language at an early age can not only aid in communication, but it helps develop fine motor skills as well as cognitive development. This practice is commonly called baby sign language, which shares the same roots as ASL, but the caregivers and children are both hearing. Common signs taught are “more,” “play,” “done,” and “milk.”
In terms of language development, studies show that orally saying a word while doing the hand motion enhances the understanding of the word, as well as the child’s oral, visual, and physical skills. Just like learning a second spoken language, signing offers many of the same benefits as being bilingual, including enhanced career prospects and cultural awareness.
Come check out our Preschool Lit Kits for ASL copies of some of our favorite books! We also have board books and nonfiction guides in the 400s on practicing signs. For middle and high school kids, check out Ann Clare LeZotte's Show Me A Sign, a story about a Deaf girl from Martha’s Vineyard. |
