Let's Get Reading
| by Shane Phillips | Summertime, and the livin' is easy!
The Summer Reading Program has officially started at the Concord Public Library. This year, our theme is "Read, Sow, Grow" in celebration of all things gardening. Keep your eyes peeled all summer long for gardening-themed programs and displays in the Children's Room.
The children's Summer Reading Program, if you're not familiar, allows your child to earn prizes for every six hours they read, or are read to. Once your child has completed their first bookmark (upon which they will log their reading time), they can come to the library to receive a tote bag. If your child has already earned a tote bag, completed bookmarks will be awarded with a fun patch!
Now that all the technical housekeeping is done, let's talk about why summer reading is so important. Statistically speaking, kids who read during the summer are more likely to retain reading comprehension and other academic skills that have been cultivated throughout the school year. Kids who avoid reading during the summer are prone to what is known as the "summer slide", a phenomenon that can make it even more difficult for your child to return to school. While some researches now believe other variables can be responsible for the summer slide, reading during the summer still holds many benefits for your kids.
But don't just take my word for it, check out these articles from the pros:
