NEW CATALOG

The Scituate Town Library, along with all of the libraries in the Old Colony Library Network, are migrating to a new library catalog called Aspen Discovery this spring. We’re confident that you’ll enjoy the many new features of this system, and look forward to sharing it with you on April 30.
As part of this process, OCLN services will be offline from Monday April 27 through Wednesday April 29.

Please note: to prepare for this change, the library will be closed between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. on April 30.

Things you CAN do from April 27 - April 29:
  • Check out materials and previously reserved items or holds if you have your library card number (please bring your library card!)
  • Use the Town of Scituate Wifi to work or study
  • Return items (they will be checked in on April 30)
  • Enjoy the space as you normally do
Things you CANNOT do between April 27-April 29:
  • Use one of the library’s public computers*
  • Access Libby/Overdrive, Kanopy or any service requiring your card
  • Book a study room online (call or stop by the library instead!)
  • Search the catalog
  • Pay bills or fines
  • Place new holds
  • Renew items
  • Make any changes to an account
  • Get a new or replacement library card
  • Reserve a museum pass (you can reserve a pass in advance for those days up until April 27th)
  • Check out a Library of Things item
TIP: Make sure you download content from Libby directly to your device BEFORE April 27 in order to use it during the three days the system is down.

*Please note: The Library’s public computers will also be offline all day on April 30.

Our new system will be fully available on Thursday, April 30. Please be aware of a few anticipated changes:
  • Our public catalog ocln.org will have a completely new look and will offer new features.
  • Any letters in your PIN will be converted to uppercase. Please use uppercase letters when you log in to the new system. (If you have never changed your PIN, it is OCLN.)
  • If you have difficulty logging in, or have forgotten your PIN / password, you'll be able to change your password by supplying your library card number and email address. New passwords can be created with any combination of numbers and upper and lowercase letters. If you have forgotten or do not have an email address with us, please visit or call the library to have your password changed. The library will be able to assist with password changes according to local policy.
  • All of your checkouts and holds will be moved to the new system. If you elected to save your reading history, it will also be moved to the new system.
We hope to cause as little disruption as possible, but this is a big change for library staff, so please be patient with us as we all learn and adjust to our new system!

DISCONTINUATION OF HOOPLA

As of April 1st, Hoopla has been discontinued.

The library has made the difficult decision to suspend the service known as “Hoopla.” This service offers a platform to stream movies, music, e-books, and audiobooks that are all available instantly to download. Unfortunately, the library’s budget is more limited each year as we make investments in both e-resources and print resources. E-resources are especially challenging, as they are often two to three times more expensive than their print counterparts. Hoopla is a pay-per-use service, and because of its popularity, the usage has outpaced the library’s budget capacity at this time, even after making a significant reduction to the number of downloads available to patrons per month. If Town or State funding changes significantly, the library may revisit this decision. Please email Library Director Jessi Finnie with any questions or concerns.

As I See It:
Making the Ordinary Extraordinary
Photography by Bart Blumberg
May 20 to June 18, 2026

As a South Shore resident for over 20 years, Bart has photographed and shown its natural beauty
and iconic features including coastal landscapes, moon rises, sunrises and sunsets.  An avid world
traveler, he enjoys the challenge of capturing an area’s people, culture, architecture and natural beauty.

His photos intentionally employ traditional art elements such as composition, light, color, pattern
and texture.

“As I See It” is on display at the Scituate Town Library Gallery with works featuring sky, sea, and landscapes, scenes from his travels, and some of his favorite photos. The show will run through June 18, 2026.

FIND YOUR NEXT READ!
Not sure what to read next?  Library staff is here for you!

If you've been a long-time reader of our newsletter, you've probably seen the "staff picks" section of suggestions at the bottom. But did you know there are lots of other ways to discover your next great read with the help of library staff and library services? Here are a few ideas for you!

Ask a Librarian! We are always happy to help you find a great book to read. We are available to chat with you about what you've recently read that you've liked and then match you up with some selections we think you'll enjoy! Just ask at the circulation desk and we will be happy to assist.

Follow us on Facebook! to get multiple reading lists a week! These book lists are thoughtfully curated by Scituate Town Library staff.

Request a BookMatch or a Book Bundle/Pack. The Library staff created two services for patrons who would like some help selecting their next great book. BookMatch is available for kids and adults and involves filling out a quick questionnaire about your reading habits. Staff then sends you back a list of titles we think you might like!  If you'd like to be surprised by a bag of books to borrow, you can fill out the Book Bundle (kids) or Book Pack  (adults) request forms. We'll put titles in a bag for you to pick up! This is a great option if you're in a hurry and want a grab & go experience.

And for teens, we have two services: Books & Bites-- which is a bag with books and snacks; and Book & Movie Night bag. Pick from our selection of book-to-movie adaptation bundles and we'll package up for you a book, movie, and a movie night snack pack.

Have you tried Novelist? NoveList is a powerhouse of a database designed for readers and built by librarians!  With NoveList you can really fine tune your reading selections, especially if you enjoy specific genres and subgenres. Try NoveList in order to:
  • Search for items with just about any search parameters you can think of

Evergreen: The Trees That Shaped America
by Trent Preszler

A sweeping natural history of the humble trees that built nations, sparked wars, and became the world's most cherished holiday tradition. Every December, millions of people around the globe adorn their homes, offices, and town squares with lavishly decorated Christmas trees to celebrate the holiday season. Yet few pause to wonder: Where did this tradition come from? And in an age of climate upheaval and artificial replicas, will these beloved trees still be here for future generations? In Evergreen, Cornell University professor Trent Preszler weaves together a captivating story of humanity's deeply rooted relationship with evergreens, revealing how the trees shaped economies, launched cultural movements, and propelled America's rise to global prominence. With stunning historical range and lyrical insight, Preszler guides readers from the awe-inspiring evergreen cathedrals of the West to Christmas tree farms in the Midwest, sawmills in the South, the iconic Rockefeller Center spruce in the East, and beyond. Blending cinematic detail with compelling ecological and cultural history, Evergreen explores the hidden tensions between nature, commerce, and spirituality that have confounded humanity for millennia. At once timeless and urgently relevant, Evergreen delivers a stirring reflection on the quiet power of trees, challenging us to reconsider the delicate balance between our restless ambition and the living world that sustains us.

This Story Might Save Your Life
by Tiffany Crum

Benny Abbott and Joy Moore host one of the most beloved podcasts in the world. Each week, they delight listeners with a different against-all-odds survival story, gleefully finding the weird, life-affirming humor in near-death experiences. Since their first episode on Joy's experience with severe narcolepsy, they've been the best friends everyone wants to befriend - and thanks to the meticulous management of Joy's husband Xander, they've built a lucrative empire. The problem is, their next survival story may be their own. When Benny arrives at Joy and Xander's one morning to record, he finds shattered glass and an empty house. The one clue shedding light on the couple's disappearance is the incomplete, previously-unseen first draft of Joy's memoir. Benny is desperate to find them, even when the police soon zero in on him as their prime suspect. Millions of devoted listeners think they know the real Benny and Joy. But as the hours tick by, and the odds seem increasingly stacked against Joy and Xander being found alive, not even the most devoted fans could guess the secrets their favorite famous BFFs have hidden from the world - and from each other.
